Understanding Your Higher Self: A Guide to Spiritual Connection

If this description resonates with you, then there is a good reason for the resonance.

According to accounts gathered by various researchers, the higher self is the part of our being that never fully leaves the spiritual realm.

It can be described as the highest level of consciousness, the core of the soul, the source of our identity, and the storehouse of all the knowledge we have ever accumulated.

When a soul chooses to incarnate, it does not descend entirely into the physical world.

Based on many sessions, it is suggested that only a portion of the soul’s energy enters the body, often somewhere between about one quarter and three quarters

The remaining part, sometimes even more than half, stays ‘there’ in its natural environment, surrounded by light and in constant connection with guides and its soul group.

This proportion is not random: younger souls often send a smaller part of themselves to limit the intensity of the experience. More advanced souls may choose to enter with a greater portion of their energy, as they have better control over themselves and their incarnation.

The part that remains is the core of the higher self, which never forgets who we are, where we come from, and where we are going.

The higher self has been described as the deepest layer of the human mind. An inner center surrounded by the subconscious. This is where memories of this and past lives are stored.

Also, the conscious mind, which handles analysis, action, and sensory input.

What makes the higher self different is that it is not limited by time or space. From its perspective, past, present, and future exist simultaneously.

What we describe as Fate has a purpose. It perceives life as a complete map with many possible paths and turning points.

From this level, it can sense the outcomes of our choices and send subtle impulses guiding us toward the path aligned with the plan set before birth.

It is also seen as an eternal part of the soul that can actively influence human life. In deep states of awareness, people often shift from their everyday personality into this higher level of consciousness.

This sense communicates with a calm and confident clarity, speaking about life in terms of a greater plan.

From this perspective, it can explain why someone experiences illness, difficult relationships, or sudden life changes, showing how these situations serve growth and learning.

It is also believed that the higher self can create direct changes in the body and mind when aligned with the soul’s purpose, removing energetic blocks, accelerating healing, and sometimes even resolving physical or emotional issues.

The higher self is not something that activates only in special states; it is present at every moment of our lives, constantly observing and processing our experiences.

In everyday life, its signals reach us as intuition, sudden insights, seemingly ‘coincidental’ encounters, or inspiration without a clear logical source.

However, the conscious mind often filters these signals through beliefs, fears, stress, and habitual thinking patterns, which is why we may not recognize or understand them.

During meditation, prayer, or deep contemplation, this filter weakens, making the connection to this higher part of ourselves more noticeable.

That connection often brings a sense of inner peace, because the higher self does not experience chaos or pain in the same way the everyday mind does.

Throughout mortal life, the higher self that we think of as Fate acts as a guardian of our soul’s plan. It observes how we move through the lessons we set for ourselves and helps ensure we do not drift too far from our intended path.

It does not force events but instead strengthens certain signals to draw our attention.

When these signals are ignored, more intense experiences may arise, not as punishment, but as a way of ensuring that the purpose of the life path is not lost.

Spirit guides play a meaningful role in this process, as they remain close to us and support us along the way.

The higher self is also a bridge to our soul group and spiritual guides. From a human perspective, we may feel separate, but in reality, there is a constant exchange of subtle communication with that ‘other side.’

This can appear through vivid, symbolic dreams, sudden realizations that bring clarity, or a deep inner knowing that a decision is simply right, even without logical explanation.

After physical death, when we fully return to the spiritual realm, we immediately reintegrate with the part of ourselves that remained there throughout life. This reunion feels like coming back to oneself after a long journey.

In that moment, it becomes clear that we were never truly disconnected; the higher self quietly guided us through every experience.

The higher self can be seen as the thread that connects us to our spiritual home. It provides continuity between lifetimes and serves as a source of inner wisdom, memory, and healing energy.

From its perspective, life is not a random sequence of events but a carefully arranged series of experiences designed to teach specific lessons.

Even when the everyday mind gets lost in details, this higher part of us always sees the full picture, patiently waiting for us to tune back into its voice. Let us hear your comments.

  1. For the last year or two I’ve been playing around listening to the Gateway tapes from the Monroe Institute. Very much the same idea, the purpose of the tapes is to show the user that world, interact with it, etc. I can’t say I’ve had any profound experiences, but there have been a few “WTF” moments that I can’t deny felt like something different.
I keep trying, but have found it challenging as there is not a concrete and steady path forward. Kinda goes in spurts, where nothing happens for 5 or 6 sessions, then you have one that feels like something happened.

  2. seems like an incredibly inefficient way to advance consciousness, imo if a being is all powerful enough to create other realms, etc. it could do much better than this, which sounds like sending a kid to school without any teachers or most of the books gone and written in strange languages, etc. and expecting them to come out as well taught people. Its like the story of the tower of babel, if god created the earth and people, he would know if a tower could be built high enough(lets suspend the usual limitations of bronze age engineering) eventually the air would get so thin they’d have to stop or pass out from lack of oxygen. Don’t get me wrong, the story is a comforting idea to deal with the uncertainties of life, tho.

  3. One could easily translate, from our Christian traditional source aka the Bible, certainly the words of Jesus, and also other OT prophets, that which the article points to. Laying down your life for a friend……the greatest love. The selflessness indicated in the Sermon on The Mount. The love for Creator and neighbour. All these from Jesus. Religions have turned the men of wise words into idols, in many cases, whereas the wise words were the only point. Jesus berated,( Luke 18v18 ) those who pedestalised him. Also Jesus’ sacrifice for the sins of the world was correct, in that God came to this realm in the flesh to show us what this ultimate sacrifice was. Pure love and complete sacrifice for all to embrace who heard the call. Ignoring is your free will choice.

    • Not good, Michelle….. . It disrupts voice production, making speech sound strained, strangled, or breathy. While there is no cure, symptoms can be effectively managed with targeted therapies and regular medical procedures. I pray for you.

  5. Hi Mike, Could you tell me if you’ve received the message I sent you sunday afternoon ? It concerned your article on “our Higher Self”. It had already gone when I realised there was something missing in my  text. I tried to rectify it but I don’t think it worked. So I’m very sorry about it and sending it again… So sorry…Michelle Hi Mike,  I don’t think that what I’m going to express would be fine for publication… Reading what you were saying, confirmed the little I knew (as, by example, soul clusters) and learning about our Higher Self, gave me a sense of reassurance for which I wish to thank you… When I saw your posting, your first sentence went right to me – as I was feeling unsure, lost, wondering about the outcome of the short medical operation I’ll have soon, on the 6th July… Some time after the passing of my daughter Candice, in 2005, I started to experience spasms, difficulty to talk. I was told it was an incurable  dysphonia  but I refused to take what the drs would advise… My social life became a misery as I couldn’t teach (privately) English and French anymore or participate in any talk, conference… Writing kept my sanity…I recently started on an EMDR treatment with a young woman psychologist and, in the process, I went to consult a woman phoniatrician who diagnosed a “laryngeal dystonia”. She is to inject botulinum toxin in my 2 vocal cords that should restore my voice but probably not permanently. Which means I would have to repete the experiment in a few months time… Well Mike, it is my turn to ask you what you think… Will you? Hugs Michelle

    • Ailmants, Michelle, are the handmaiden of the ageing process. I have reached that stage of life where I wonder which is the best; mortality or painless immortality and see what happens next. I too ail, fibrosis, heart and narrowing leg arteries. I too wish I were fixable. Much love, Mikw
