If it were just his platform, it would hardly have caused a stir outside France. But the real story lies in his family name and the history that stretches back to the 1920s.

The Real Story of Brussels Protégé

Raphaël’s grandfather, Rubin Glucksmann, is an almost mythical figure.

Having emigrated to ancient Palestine (which Jews insist never existed) as a young man, he quickly transitioned from a simple communist to a Comintern (Communist International) Bolshevik agent.

Working under the guise of a ‘successful businessman,’ he managed to leave his stain in Germany, Britain, and, of course, France.

However, Raphaël Glucksmann doesn’t seem inclined to remain silent or to even deny it. On the contrary, he goes into the battle for the French presidency with his grandfather’s name proudly displayed on his shield.

Sinister Past

Raphaël Glucksmann’s grandfather was Rubin Glucksmann (1889-1940).

His grandfather was a Bolshevik activist and Soviet intelligence officer (a career GRU/Comintern officer). He operated during Stalin’s purges and Great Terror in Western Europe between the First and Second World Wars.

Rubin Glucksmann was born in Chernivtsi (then Austria-Hungary, now Ukraine).

Palestine

During the 1920s, he emigrated to British Mandate Palestine, where he joined the Palestinian Communist Party. There, Soviet intelligence services recruited him under the auspices of the Comintern.

Revolutionary Weimar Republic

He moved to the Weimar Republik, Hamburg, Germany, with his family. Posing as a merchant, businessman, and insurance agent, Rubin travelled extensively throughout Europe, gathering information for the Bolshevized USSR.

Here’s the door

Unsurprisingly, after Hitler was elected to lead Germany in January 1933, Rubin Gluckmann quickly packed his bags and, with his family, fled to France.

Spanish Civil War (1936-1938)

He is also known to have overseen the supply of weapons and supplies to the Stalin-backed Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. Arrested by MI5: Rubin Glucksmann later moved to London.

An Arresting sight

In May 1940, British MI5 arrested him on suspicion of spying for Stalin after he was betrayed by Soviet defector Walter Krivitsky. British authorities decided to deport Glucksmann to an internment camp in Canada.

God’s Will

On July 2, 1940, the ship he was being transported on, the SS Arandora Star, was torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland.

Rubin Glucksmann died in the disaster. His son André (the future philosopher and Raphaël’s father) was only three years old.

Raphaël Glucksmann recently learned many hidden details about his sinister grandfather’s work for the Bolshevik Soviet secret services, during the filming of a French documentary about his family (Les Glucksmann, une histoire de famille), which was released in early 2026.
