She became one of the most influential female artists in the genre, with 20 number‑one country hits and a career that shaped the role of women in country music.

Tammy enjoyed considerable success and recorded more than 20 No. 1 singles, and over 30 million records sold worldwide.

Tammy’s vocal style was described as being emotional, with a teardrop‑in‑every‑note delivery.

Born in rural Itawamba County, Mississippi, she was raised by her grandparents after her father died of a brain tumor when she was an infant.

A working-class heroine, Tammy worked picking cotton as a child and dreamed of becoming a singer.  ‘I hated every minute I spent picking cotton,’ she recalled.

She married at 17 and worked as a beautician before moving to Nashville in 1966 to pursue music.

After signing with Epic Records, Wynette quickly became a star: Her hits included (1966) Apartment No. 9 and her breakthrough hit the charts a year later with Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad.

Her songs often reflected themes of heartbreak, resilience, and the struggles of relationships, many drawn from her own life.

Tammy Wynette’s personal life was as dramatic as her music: Married five times, including a highly publicised marriage to country legend George Jones (1969–1975).

Their partnership produced several hit duets and made them one of country music’s most famous couples.

Sadly, Tammy struggled with chronic health issues and addiction to painkillers.

Tammy Wynette was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1998.
