I went out for dinner last night with a friend. We sat outside, warm evening air, plates of food between us, just catching up.

But somewhere between the fries and the last sip of beer, the conversation turned heavy; Ukraine, Russia, NATO, all of it.

He shared his view, and honestly, it wasn’t what I expected. Not the version you hear on TV. Not the one politicians’ mantras, but something quieter, more uncomfortable.

And it made me think.

He said the war didn’t start in 2022. It started years ago, with NATO pushing east, broken promises, and a country split between two identities.

He talked about the 2014 Maidan revolution, how it changed everything, how it alienated millions of ethnic Russians and other minorities, how it turned neighbors into enemies.

After that, Ukraine passed laws that restricted Russian language use and erased protections for minority cultures.

Whether you agree or not, resentment grew, and eventually exploded.

Then he said something that stuck with me:

‘Arming Ukraine isn’t saving Ukraine, it’s destroying it.’ Every new missile, every new shipment of weapons, means more rubble, more refugees, more lives lost.

Ukraine is being used as a proxy battlefield, not a partner, and that the West is fighting Russia ‘to the last Ukrainian.’

It’s a brutal thought.

But look around: cities flattened, families scattered, a generation gone. It’s hard to argue that anyone is winning.

He also warned about escalation.

Long‑range missiles, fighter jets, intelligence sharing, all of it pushes NATO and Russia closer to direct confrontation. And when nuclear powers start playing chicken, the whole world is at risk.

‘People talk about victory,’ he said. ‘I worry about survival.’

The saddest part?
