SAS veteran Ben Roberts-Smith could face life in prison if found guilty of murdering unarmed Afghan civilians.
One of Australia’s most-decorated soldiers has been arrested on war crimes charges related to the indiscriminate slayings of several unarmed Afghan civilians between 2009 and 2012.
Former special forces (SAS) soldier and Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith has been charged with five counts of war crimes and refused bail. He is expected to appear in court in mid-May.
At a press conference, Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Krissy Barrett said that the SAS veteran is suspected of personally executing two captured Afghan civilians. Furthermore, he ordered his subordinates to shoot three others, including in a so-called ‘blooding’ ritual involving a rookie soldier.
Roberts-Smith is charged with kicking an Afghan man off a cliff and ordered his execution on one occasion, and murdered another prisoner with a leg prosthesis in a separate episode.
According to Barrett, ’it will be alleged the victims were not taking part in hostilities,’ and ’were detained, unarmed, and… under the control of the Australian Defence Force members when they were killed.’
If found guilty, Roberts-Smith could receive life in prison.
His arrest was preceded by a five-year investigation, during which the authorities tapped phones in Australia and offshore and secured incriminating testimonies from other SAS veterans, according to Australian media.
In 2023, Roberts-Smith lost a defamation case against journalists who had reported that he murdered civilians during his deployment in Afghanistan. The ruling was upheld by Australia’s Federal Court in May last year.
In 2023, another Australian soldier was charged with murder while deployed in Afghanistan. The trial is expected to commence next February.

They want the soldiers to fight mercilessly like Israeli soldiers, then if they cross a line that some doof notices back home they are prosecuted by the PC establishment!—-this is a lose/lose situation!—-my heart goes out to our Australian Brothers who live under a ZOG Tyranny worse than what we have in America as they don’t have the Basic Rights we do enshrined in the Constitution. America conducted brutal war crimes against the Indians and nary a word is said. However the Indians were pretty brutal themselves , so the “payback” from Whites was not held back. The Indians had plenty of tortures that they would inflict on captives —A great read is a book I found at the thrift store—called Wilderness Empire. Tells both sides of the early American scene fairly and squarely. Would be awesome “required reading” for students of History. By the way I understand our ICE agents are trained by the Israelis.
