HEALTH MATTERS. Blood tests are one of the most important tools in medicine because they can reveal how different organs and systems in your body are functioning, often before symptoms become obvious.
A blood test can provide information about:
General health: It can detect signs of infection, inflammation, anemia, dehydration, or nutritional deficiencies.
Blood cells: A complete blood count (CBC/FBC) measures red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Abnormal results may suggest infection, anemia, immune disorders, or blood-related diseases.
What to look for
Heart health: Cholesterol and triglyceride levels help assess the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Blood sugar control: Glucose and HbA1c tests can identify diabetes or prediabetes.
Liver function: Liver enzymes and other markers can indicate liver inflammation, damage, or disease.
Kidney function: Creatinine, urea, and related tests show how well the kidneys are filtering waste.
Hormone levels: Tests can evaluate thyroid function, reproductive hormones, cortisol, and more.
Vitamin and mineral status: Deficiencies in vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, folate, and other nutrients can be detected.
Immune and inflammatory conditions: Certain markers can suggest autoimmune diseases or chronic inflammation.
What blood tests cannot do
Blood tests are powerful, but they rarely provide a complete diagnosis on their own. Results need to be interpreted alongside:
Your symptoms. Medical history. Physical examination. Other tests such as imaging (X-rays, ultrasound, MRI) or biopsies when necessary
Are abnormal results always serious?
Not necessarily. A result outside the ‘normal’ range does not automatically mean there is a disease.
Factors such as age, sex, medications, diet, exercise, hydration, and even the time of day can affect results. Doctors look at the overall pattern rather than a single number.
Should healthy people get blood tests?
Routine blood tests can be useful in certain situations, such as health check-ups, monitoring existing conditions, or assessing risk factors.
However, testing without a medical reason does not always improve health outcomes and can sometimes lead to unnecessary follow-up investigations.

Over 40% of Americans now have a positive view of Socialism
According to a report from Gallup.com, 43 percent of Americans now say they view socialism positively — the first time that share has climbed above 39 percent in the polling firm’s tracking since 2010.
The finding, from interviews conducted Aug. 3-24, places socialism still behind capitalism and free enterprise but, for the first time in this series, ahead of big business.
Gallup found that small business remains overwhelmingly popular, while market-oriented ideas have lost ground over 15 years. Positive views of big business have dropped 14 points since 2010, free enterprise nine points and capitalism six points.
Socialism’s favorable rating has risen seven points in the same span. “Small business remains the clear leader among the five economic concepts tested, with 95% viewing it positively,” the report stated.
Most of socialism’s longer-term gain came from Democrats, whose positive rating rose from 50 percent in 2010 to 66 percent last year. This year’s increase, Gallup said, came entirely from independents.
“The latest uptick, however, comes entirely from political independents, whose positive rating jumped from 37% last year to 45% today.” Democrats sit at 65 percent; Republicans remain below 15 percent.
Independents now rate socialism ahead of big business, whose positive score among them has fallen to a new low of 32 percent. Among Democrats, socialism long ago overtook capitalism and now ties free enterprise at 65 percent after a drop in Democrats’ view of free enterprise since 2021.
Their positive rating of capitalism fell from 42 percent last year to 35 percent now. Republicans still give large majorities to small business, free enterprise and capitalism; 14 percent view socialism positively, and 62 percent view big business that way.
Age splits are stark. Adults 18 to 34 rate socialism more positively than capitalism, 57 percent versus 43 percent. Those 55 and older reverse that pattern, 65 percent versus 34 percent.
People 35 to 54 rate the two systems about equally. Men favor capitalism over socialism; women reverse that pattern.
Higher-income households are more positive toward free enterprise and capitalism; lower-income Americans are more positive toward socialism, though it only ties capitalism among them.
Gallup concluded that Americans have not abandoned markets. “Yet the trends don’t indicate wholesale movement away from markets and toward socialism.” Small business stays nearly universally popular, and free enterprise still draws broadly positive ratings even among Democrats and younger adults.
Open-ended Gallup research has found support for competition and market choice alongside worry about inequality and corporate power.
