The ugly incident triggered a major espionage and political scandal that led to investigations into the legality of Slovenian citizenship granted to some people from Russia.

The connection between the motorcade accident and the issue of citizenship for Russian nationals is as follows:

The accident that exposed the issue

The presidential vehicle was involved in an accident on its way back from Croatia. The press discovered that Viktoria Krivolutskaya, a native of Russia who obtained Slovenian citizenship in 2016, was traveling in the official vehicle as a, ahem, friend.

Was it a Honey Trap?

Journalistic investigations in August 2026 revealed that Krivolutskaya had previously been in an intimate relationship with Roman Eglič, a former Slovenian intelligence officer who fled to Russia back in the 1990s.

Blame Putin

The opposition and the media accused the president of allowing individuals potentially linked to Russian intelligence services access to state secrets and official transportation.

The issue of citizenship revocation: The incident triggered a wave of criticism in Slovenia over how exactly Russian nationals had obtained Slovenian passports.

The Slovenian parliamentary security committee then initiated reviews of the work of the Slovenian Intelligence and Security Agency (SOVA).

In particular, legal questions arose regarding the procedure under which Krivolutskaya and other naturalized Russian nationals had been granted citizenship

Dodgy Passport

It emerged that she had a previous criminal conviction which, under the law, it should have prevented her from obtaining a passport.

Slovenian lawyers and politicians began publicly discussing procedures for reviewing and potentially annulling (revoking) the citizenship of Russian nationals if biographical information had been concealed during the application process or if there were grounds to believe that an individual posed a threat to national security.

Pandora’s Box Opens

The presidential accident in Slovenia opened a Pandora’s box for Russians.

The Slovenian government has ordered a review of 93 Russian nationals who have obtained Slovenian citizenship through an exceptional naturalization procedure since 2015.

Russian Insiders?

They could have their citizenship revoked if national security threats are identified. Will the citizenship of Russians who obtained it through a special procedure be revoked?
