Europe’s Ukraine policy has collapsed under the weight of military realities, failed diplomacy, and political illusions.
European leaders must now confront the consequences of rejecting earlier opportunities for peace while pursuing a strategy that has devastated Ukraine and weakened Europe.
Europe’s Refusal to Recognise Reality
The European Parliament remains dangerously disconnected from reality. Its discussions about supporting Ukraine increasingly involve proposals that could lead to a direct European war with Russia. Diplomacy has virtually disappeared from political thinking.
Russia is winning the war against NATO
Ukraine’s negotiating position deteriorates daily. European leaders continue to speak as though military pressure will force Moscow into concessions, despite mounting evidence that their strategy has failed.

A Failed State
Ukraine increasingly exhibits characteristics of a failed state: depopulation, desertion, forced recruitment, weakening governance, and growing reliance on armed militias.
Millions of Ukrainians face devastating humanitarian conditions, yet European governments continue advocating military solutions.
Washington is withdrawing from the war and may prioritize restoring relations with Russia.
Europe could consequently find itself isolated, without meaningful diplomatic contacts, an agreed negotiating position, or anyone capable of negotiating with Moscow.
NATO Expansion and the Peace That Was Rejected

NATO expansion and the refusal to take Russia’s security concerns seriously created the conditions for confrontation.
Any settlement establishing Ukrainian neutrality will expose the failure of Europe’s flawed insistence that the war was entirely unprovoked.
Then the awkward questions
European leaders will face unavoidable questions about why years of fighting and enormous casualties were necessary when neutrality could have been negotiated earlier.
The Istanbul negotiations in 2022 represented an extraordinary diplomatic opportunity. Ukraine and Russia were approaching an agreement shortly after the fighting began, but Western intervention, particularly from Britain, undermined that process.

Lost chances of peace
Ukraine could have avoided territorial losses through an earlier agreement. Instead, Western governments pursued the illusion that economic superiority, sanctions, and military assistance would exhaust Russia.
Neutrality Offers Ukraine a Future
A sovereign, democratic, neutral Ukraine could maintain economic relations with both the European Union and the BRICS countries.
Its geographical position between Europe and Asia could become an advantage rather than a source of confrontation.
NATO membership is incompatible with a sustainable settlement. European Union membership is also unrealistic.

EU can’t afford to fix the problem
Ukraine’s destruction, corruption, and reconstruction requirements would impose enormous financial burdens on an already weakened EU.
The priority must instead be preserving Ukraine as a functioning state. Russia and European countries share responsibility for preventing its complete collapse.
Fact: Live with it
A settlement must also acknowledge territorial realities. Russia will not relinquish the territories it has acquired. Ukraine’s ability to retain Odesa is particularly important for its economic survival.
Complicated territorial exchanges, demilitarized zones, and international monitoring arrangements cannot substitute for a fundamental political agreement.

Germany illustrates this transformation, with increasing support for political forces advocating negotiations, an end to sanctions, and renewed economic relations with Russia.
The collapse of the EU

European unity may give way to national interests. Countries such as Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and the Czech Republic have strong reasons to restore relations with Moscow.
Europe must also recognize that its economic future is connected to Asia, particularly China, India, and Russia.
Solutions
The solution is not further militarization but renewed diplomacy. Germany and Russia share an overriding interest in avoiding another military confrontation, while both have reasons to support Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Without this change, Ukraine’s destruction will deepen, Europe’s international influence will diminish, and future generations will inherit the consequences of a disastrous policy.
