Sergio Leone’s legendary Western town in Almería, Spain, is back on the market with a significant price reduction.

Nestled among the arid mountains and dirt roads of the Tabernas Desert in Almería, one of the most recognisable locations in European Western cinema still stands.

Western Leone

This is Western Leone, a Western town built in the late 1960s for the filming of Sergio Leone’s iconic film, Once Upon a Time in the West. The town, typical of the American West in the 19th Century, is now being promoted on the real estate market with a renewed sales push.

The sale isn’t new. The town was officially listed in 2022 with a price of around €2.5-2.8 million

A bargain at €1.6 million

It has now reappeared for €1.6 million, a significant reduction from its initial listing.

The current listing is being handled by an Almería-based real estate agency, which presents it as an opportunity linked to film, tourism, and events.

The promotional campaign has even reached social media. In a recently released video, the message plays on the idea that the location is not ‘just a set,’ but a space with future potential.

Vast potential

‘It’s not a set, it’s an original 1960s Western town, and today it’s for sale,’ the video states, emphasizing that the site’s appeal lies not only in what it once was, but ‘in what it can still become.’

Western Leone occupies a unique place in Almería’s cinematic history.

The set was built specifically for Once Upon a Time in the West (C’era una volta il West), the epic Western that Sergio Leone filmed in 1968 with actors such as Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, and Jason Robards.

Spaghetti Westerns

Part of the set recreated the fictional town of Sweetwater, one of the film’s central locations.

The film is considered one of the most influential works of the genre and is part of the legacy that made the Tabernas Desert a global landmark of the Spaghetti Western.

Around these landscapes were built some of the most famous sets in European Western cinema, such as MiniHollywood, Fort Bravo/Texas Hollywood, and Western Leone itself, which is still open to visitors and used for audiovisual productions.

Frozen in time

Over the decades, the site hasn’t remained frozen in time. Besides attracting visitors, it has hosted the filming of commercials, music videos, and other audiovisual projects.

These include the music video for ‘Boum Boum Boum’ by the singer Mika, as well as advertising campaigns and themed events related to the Western genre.

A Western Town with New Business Ideas

The new real estate development focuses precisely on the future of the site.

The advertisement describes a space prepared for filming, themed tourism, immersive experiences, weddings, corporate events, concerts, and cultural activities, arguing that it already has a recognizable identity and a history upon which to build new projects.

Year-Round Opportunity

The real estate company marketing the property insists that the site shouldn’t be seen solely as a film set, but as a space capable of generating activity year-round.

The idea is clear: to take advantage of the symbolic weight of the western in Almería and the visual force of a place that, more than half a century after its construction, continues to evoke the cinema of Sergio Leone among the reddish earth of Tabernas.
