US Department of War cover-up of troop casualties

The Grave Robbers: The Pentagon has quietly removed 15 wounded-in-action troops from its official casualty count for the US-Israeli war on Iran without any public explanation.

The day the ceasefire between the US and Iran took effect, the tally of dead and wounded American troops we were told stood at 385.

Two Pentagon spokespersons told The Intercept they were unable to answer questions about the 15 casualties that disappeared from the Department of War’s count on Tuesday.

They claimed only the duty officer could address the question, but that person was not at their desk.

US official calls casualty undercount a ‘cover-up’

Whatever the actual number, the Pentagon’s official tally of dead and wounded military personnel represents a significant undercount.

This anomaly stems from what one US government official has described as a ‘casualty cover-up’.

The Defense Casualty Analysis System, which tracks deceased, wounded, or ill service members for Congress and the president, is missing hundreds of known casualties.

‘These numbers, it is obvious, are important. That they don’t want the public to have them says something,’ the official told The Intercept. ‘That’s the definition of a cover-up.’

Former DCAS workers say there was historically very little delay between a casualty occurring in the field and its inclusion in the system, as the data was refreshed daily.

Pentagon fails to explain missing casualties

Both the US Central Command and the Office of the Secretary of War have stopped answering questions or granting interviews with experts.

This follows long-running efforts by Trump to mislead the American public about US military casualties.

Hundreds of injuries are missing from the official count

The DCAS figures show that at least 63 Navy personnel have been wounded in action.

However, missing from the count are more than 200 sailors treated for smoke inhalation or lacerations due to a March 12 fire that raged aboard the USS Gerald R. Ford

A former DCAS worker questioned why the smoke inhalation injuries from the USS Ford were missing from the publicly reported data.

‘That should have been entered into DCAS,’ she said. ‘My concern is why that piece is now missing.’ Slain soldier missing from Pentagon count

In addition to ignoring untold numbers of sick and wounded personnel, the Pentagon has undercounted the dead during the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Trump made false statements about casualties

During a Tuesday interview, Trump repeatedly said that 13 male service members had died during Operation Epic Fury.

‘We lost 13 men,’ he said on CNBC. According to DCAS, three of the dead are actually women: Major Ariana Gabriella Savino, Technical Sergeant Ashley Brooke Pruitt, and Master Sergeant Nicole Marie Amor.

The Cover-up

Almost a decade ago, the Trump administration began taking steps to undermine transparency surrounding US military casualties.

In 2017, the Department of War stopped releasing immediate information about American combat deaths in Afghanistan, an unannounced shift in traditional policy that delayed casualty announcements for days.

After an Iranian missile attack on Ain al-Assad Air Base in Iraq in January 2020, Trump falsely claimed that ‘no Americans were harmed.’

The Department of War later acknowledged that 110 troops suffered traumatic brain injuries, with an inspector general report suggesting the number may have been even higher.

A former Department of War spokesperson later revealed that the Trump White House pressured the military to downplay those troops’ injuries.

‘We did get pushback from the White House of ‘Can you guys report this differently?’’ she said. ‘The White House would prefer if we did not give regular updates on it.’
