The Red Rose Café ~ Video

MICHAEL WALSH CULTURAL PURSUIT The Red Rose Café ballad began life as a Dutch folk song. It is about an ordinary harbor bar. Here, everyday people briefly escape their worries.

Over time, it became an international classic, especially after The Fureys popularized the English version.

Origins of the Song

•       The song was originally written and composed in Dutch. It is titled ‘Het kleine café aan de haven’. Pierre Kartner, better known as Vader Abraham, created it. The song was released in 1975.

•       Its melody and theme were so universally appealing that it quickly spread beyond the Netherlands, inspiring many translations and covers across Europe

The English Version: The Red Rose Café

•       The English lyrics were adapted by Don Black, keeping Kartner’s original melody.

•       Pierre Kartner himself recorded the first English version in 1986. Later, The Fureys made it widely known in the English‑speaking world.

What the Ballad is About

The song paints a warm, nostalgic picture of a small café by the harbor just outside Amsterdam, where people from all walks of life gather:

•       Farmers, factory workers, salesmen, poets

•       A girl with green eyes in a Rolling Stones shirt

•       A man who sells second‑hand cars

•       An old man playing piano

These characters aren’t important individually—the café is the real star. It represents:

•       A sanctuary from daily struggles

•       Camaraderie and shared humanity

•       A place where social differences disappear

The song’s emotional power comes from its celebration of simple joys: music, laughter, and the comfort of being together.
