Great Europeans

The Nonconforming British Historian Who Tried to Warn the World

GREAT EUROPEANS: British historian Robert Conquest (1917-2015) documented Bolshevik mass murder in Ukraine.

He also investigated the Gulag system. Meanwhile, Western academics were celebrating the ‘Soviet experiment.’

Harvard and hundreds of academics praised Stalin’s re-inventing Russia, which, according to Solzhenitsyn, cost the lives of 67.6 million people.

QUOTE: According to estimates by exiled professor of statistics I. A. Kurganov, from 1917 to 1959, the cost was 66.7 million people. This excludes war losses.

These losses were only from terrorist destruction, suppression, and hunger. The high mortality in the camps and subsequent low birth rate were also factors. (The Gulag Archipelago, part 3, Chapter 1). ‘Control of the media is in the hands of the perpetrators.’ ~ Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

British intellectuals like George Bernard Shaw visited Moscow and declared the future had arrived. Campus activists wore Che Guevara shirts and quoted Lenin.

Anyone questioning this narrative got dismissed as a reactionary or worse.

One British Historian Refused to Look Away.

Robert Conquest spent the 1960s piecing together evidence from refugee testimonies, leaked documents, and demographic data that didn’t add up.

His 1968 book ‘The Great Terror’ documented Stalin’s purges with precision. His 1986 work ‘The Harvest of Sorrow’ detailed the Ukrainian famine that killed millions.

The academic establishment and Western mainstream media dismissed his warnings as propaganda. The Soviet government called it lies. His publisher struggled to find reviewers willing to take him seriously.

Conquest calculated that Stalin’s collectivization and purges killed between 13 and 15 million Soviet citizens between 1930 and 1953.

Western scholars said this was absurd.

The consensus estimate was 2 to 3 million deaths, most from ‘unfortunate policy mistakes’ rather than deliberate murder.

Conquest’s crime? He did the math.

Conquest’s crime? As did later Holocaust revisionists, he did the math. He compared Soviet census data from 1926, 1937, and 1939. Millions of people had simply vanished from official records.

In ‘The Harvest of Sorrow,’ Conquest documented the Holodomor. This was Stalin’s engineered famine in Ukraine. It killed 7 million people in 1932-33.

Soviet officials seized grain at gunpoint. They banned travel from affected regions. They denied international food aid. Villages were left to starve while grain sat in government warehouses or got exported for foreign currency.

Mainstream Media covered up the genocide

The New York Times’ Moscow correspondent Walter Duranty called reports of famine ‘malignant propaganda.’ He won a Pulitzer Prize for his Soviet coverage.

Conquest called it genocide. And he was professionally isolated for saying so.

Why Did Smart People Refuse to Believe Him?

Because acknowledging Conquest meant admitting the entire progressive intellectual project of the 20th century had defended mass murder.

It meant Harvard professors had praised a system that killed millions. It meant ‘useful idiots’ had provided cover for industrial-scale atrocity. It meant campus radicals had romanticized totalitarianism.

The cognitive dissonance was too strong. So, they dismissed the evidence instead.

Then the USSR Collapsed, and the Archives Opened

In the 1990s, Soviet archives became accessible to researchers. Conquest’s estimates were vindicated almost exactly.

Some figures were even worse than he predicted (See Solzhenitsyn quote).

The NKVD execution lists confirmed what he’d pieced together. The deportation records also supported his findings. Additionally, the famine mortality data verified his earlier conclusions.

I Told You So, You Fucking Fools

His publisher asked whether he wanted to revise the title of ‘The Great Terror’ for a new edition. Conquest supposedly replied that it should be renamed ‘I Told You So, You Fucking Fools’.

In reality, a friend coined the line. The final title was a far more diplomatic choice. It was much more in keeping with Conquest’s own style. But the point had already been made.

Obfuscation of the truth still happens today

Conquest’s vindication exposes something critical about how elite consensus works. When an entire institutional apparatus has committed to a narrative, it systematically dismisses individual researchers.

This occurs even when these researchers have contradicting evidence. The data quality is not considered.

The problem wasn’t that Conquest lacked evidence. Accepting his evidence was difficult. Western academics would have to admit they’d been wrong about the defining ideological question of their generation.

Professional incentives, social pressure, and ideological commitment all aligned to reject information that contradicted the dominant worldview. Even when millions of lives hung in the balance.

Conquest’s story teaches a crucial skill: how to evaluate evidence when institutional authority aligns against it.

Our College Survival Kit teaches you the frameworks he used. It shows you how to recognize gaps in official narratives.

You will learn how to find and evaluate alternative sources. The kit also helps you maintain intellectual courage when everyone tells you you’re wrong.

The Real Question Isn’t Whether Conquest Was Right. The archives settled that. He was right, just as those who question the holocaust narrative are being proved right.

The real question is: what are today’s Robert Conquest’s documenting? Hundreds of elite institutions systematically dismiss the obvious. The mainstream media also dismisses the obvious.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn. You must understand, the leading Bolsheviks who took over Russia were not Russians. They hated Russia. They hated Christians. Driven by ethnic hatred, they tortured and slaughtered millions of Russians without a shred of remorse.

It cannot be overstated Bolshevism committed the greatest human slaughter of all time. The fact that most of the world is ignorant or uncaring is proof that the global media is in the hands of the perpetrators.” ~ Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

NOTE: WITNESS TO HISTORY by historian Michael Walsh is the only book that completely destroys the war victors’ propaganda. It is widely regarded as the most popular book in the history of historical revisionism. This remarkable book is the perfect response to the notorious lies and half-truths presented in William L. Shirer’s History of the Third Reich.

Affordable illustrated copies are available from The Barnes Review, a US-based publication. They provide thousands of never-before-known facts about the origins of the Third Reich. Adolf Hitler almost successfully attempted to introduce a new world order. This was the opposite of the decaying Judaic multi-racial degenerate cesspit endured today.

Witness to History has an international readership of hundreds of thousands. It has radically changed the minds of millions duped by the propaganda of the victors. One book by one man is changing history and perceptions of the Third Reich.

‘I have read a lot about WWII and Germany. This includes David Irving’s books. However, you wrapped it all in a really tidy and factual package. I highly recommend it to all my history truth-seeking friends.  Thank you for such a great book.’ ~ B. Wiggles. https://barnesreview.org/product/witness-to-history-the-reich-legend-uncensored/

  1. “Conquest’s vindication exposes something critical about how elite consensus works. When an entire institutional apparatus has committed to a narrative, it systematically dismisses individual researchers.”I wonder how many people think the above thought process doesn’t apply to scientific or medicinal fields? Doctors and scientists to dare to disagree with the high priests of their industries are immediately marginalized and (if inconvenient enough), will eventually run them out of said industries. Great work on Conquest. Admittedly, I had never heard of him, but he obviously did some amazing analysis of the jewish communists’ genocide of Russian and Ukrainian Christians. He sounds every bit as brave as David Irving and Ernst Zundel. On the Holodomor, I am simply amazed at how the jewish media of the US/Canada conducted a thorough blackout of any and all genocidal activities of the bolshevik jews, yet the Germans and Poles (who defeated Bronstein/Trotsky and the red army) were obviously well aware of the menace on their doorsteps.  Robert

      • I think it’s wonderful that Mr Conquest was able to reveal all that he did in his work. It’s also a good thing that he left the Communist Party of Great Britain when he did.

Robert Conquest was a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain for about two years. He joined while studying at Oxford in 1937 and officially left in 1939

Then later in life he worked for the Hoover Institute at Stanford University. The Hoover Institute, that great “think tank” I love the way the Institue “collected” all sorts of documents, from around the world. Ingenious, don’t you think Mr Walsh?

Will calls to reevaluate Stanford’s relationship to Hoover have any impact? History suggests no

I cannot believe the Hoover Institute would ever peddle anything other than the truth. I have read its mission statement and its aims:

Aside from opposing totalitarianism, its core principles focus on: Representative Government: Support for the U.S. Constitution, its Bill of Rights, and democratic institutions. Private Enterprise: Championing free markets and capitalism as the primary drivers of human progress, initiative, and ingenuity.Peaceful Diplomacy: Recalling the “voice of experience against the making of war” and studying records to preserve peace.

Peaceful diplomacy, we can see that daily. Capitalism as the primary driver of progress. I think Trotsky when he was in New York in 1917 and earlier would agree with that. It was very progressive for him. Does Hoover Institute ever criticize democracy, when it becomes and fundamentally is totalitarian, and always was, or does it ignore that? I look forward to more peaceful democracy and progressive capitalsim from the US and its “think tank”. I particularly appreciate how well General Major Smedley Butler depicted peaceful diplomacy and progressive capitalism. He was a fine example of it, don’t you think Mr Walsh? No totalitarianism or imperialism there, just good old capitalist, progressive democracy.

        Excellent!

      • Similar things happened with George Orwell after spending some time in Spain. He became fully disillusioned with the Communist Party. I find it ridiculous today that Franco is still smeared when the Soviet influence in Spain was insane in its brutality.

  3. I am glad that Mr Conquest had such a positive effecr. Let’s be honest, the west has always known what the soviet bolsheviks were like and what they were doing, it aided them, made it all possible. Without the West’s backing, there’d be no Putin, or those before him.You know how many lives could have been spared, all the destruction avoided? So, all the horrors that Mr Conquest writes about is not the sole doing of that abysmal regime. The West is entirely complicit.

Robert Conquest focused primarily on the totalitarian nature of the Bolsheviks and Joseph Stalin’s internal terror rather than Western complicity in creating the regime. In famous works like The Great Terror and The Harvest of Sorrow, he argued that the horrors of the USSR were the direct, tragic outgrowth of Lenin’s initial ideology and Stalin’s subsequent drive for power. So the horrors weren’t the direct outgrowth of the warmongers and revolutionary funders by Wall Street and London? Conquest does not cover this.

To me, the likes of Adrien Arcand, who was warning about communism, while Conquest was a communist member was far more valid. Then Arcand was imprisoned for over 5 years. Of course, we know about Tyler Kent. Conquest is not in these men’s league. They tried to stop communism, he was rewarded for writing about it, years later. He did nothing to try and stop the horrors. He benefited from writing and publishing about it, even though he had some backlash. He’s a non-conformist hero??? He does not deserve the title. Has not earned it, like the other two men did. They sacrificed a great deal. Conquest sacrficed nothing. That’s just my opinion.

This video includes parts of Tyler Kent’s unforgettable interview and how the US funded and aided the Soviets on a huge scale. It did not stop nor start with Lend Lease.

Larry McDonald was killed when the plane he was on was destroyed by the Soviets. He was anti-communist and spoke up about how powerful forces do want to create a one world govt, and use the US to achieve this, which it has done. He would die shortly after this final interview. I am sure you have seen all these. A staunch anti-communist, McDonald frequently warned about secretive elites, globalist institutions, and what he termed a “New World Order” plotting to dissolve national sovereignty in favor of a collectivist world government. Did Mr Conquest write about this?

    Larry McDonald: New World Order

These are the true non-conformist heroes, and they paid a high price for being so. Conquest, not the case. Did Mr Conquest write about this:

Something tells me Mr Conquest did not broach this subject either.

It is not allowing me to share the link. This is the first time I have ever encountered that with any link. Copying and pasting the article title itself in one’s browser will locate said article. It’s worthwhile reading..

    Here is an excerpt for:

“Will calls to reevaluate Stanford’s relationship to Hoover have any impact? History suggests no”

    From the: Stanford Daily

By Cameron Ehsan on November 9, 2020I

In late February, when the coronavirus had just begun to infiltrate the United States, Hoover Institution board members were reportedly given a grave yet subtle warning about the dire impacts the COVID-19 epidemic, soon to be pandemic, would have on the economy and society at large. These notices came from the highest levels of government and President Donald Trump’s senior advisers, the very individuals who had been publicly downplaying the risk of the coronavirus and claiming that it had been defeated

A memo documenting the meeting of Hoover board members and senior administration officials began to circulate, and within a day the memo reached four investment firms, guiding trading for elite investors, according to The New York Times. By the time trading closed on Feb. 26, the day after the Hoover Institution retreat in Washington, D.C., had ended, U.S. stock markets had fallen nearly 300 points from the previous week’s high. Hoover board members, many of whom are affluent Republican party donors, had access to insight gained directly from the president’s aides that was used to prioritize economic gain.

The warning has intensified calls to reevaluate the relationship between Stanford and the Hoover Institution — so far to no avail. No one outside the Hoover Institution knew about the early warning, according to Stanford spokespeople, but since it became public through The Times, Stanford leadership has not spoken out. After a professor asked at an October Faculty Senate meeting whether the University would take action in response to these reports, Provost Persis Drell said about Hoover, “In a very real sense, and I think this is important to keep in mind, they are, in fact, us.”

My views on the Hoover Institute is that it’s a gatekeeping entity, much like the University it is connected to. I don’t have a high opinion of the Hoover Institute, or those that work within it, certainly not its board members.

  5. Well said. There are a few memorials for him.

Did you know he was allegedly murdered on August 12, 1935, the day before his 30th birthday.

Gareth Jones Street (Kyiv, Ukraine): In 2020, the Kyiv City Council renamed a street in the Shevchenkivskyi district in his honour.

Kyiv Memorial Plint. A large, trilingual plinth made of traditional Welsh slate sits on the Kyiv street named after him. It is decorated with crossed Welsh and Ukrainian flags and features his image.

Barry, Wales. In 2022, a blue plaque was unveiled at his family home in Barry, his Welsh hometown.

Aberystwyth University. A trilingual memorial plaque was unveiled at his alma mater in 2006.

National Library of Ukraine. Another memorial plaque is installed at the National Library in Kyiv, commemorating his reporting.

Mr. Jones (2019) A biographical thriller directed by Agnieszka Holland, starring James Norton as Gareth Jones. The film tracks his harrowing journey into the Soviet Union and his quest to report the truth about the devastating famine. One of the distributors for North Ameris Samuel Goldwyn Films. I think that already tells us something.

The film takes creative liberties with the real timeline and events. I had a feeling we weren’t going to keep it real. It only took 84 yeas to finaly make and release it. Still can’t get it right.

    Some of the liberties taken:

The Holodomor: The film accurately depicts the horrific man-made famine in Ukraine in 1932–1933. It authentically recreates the desolate, snow-covered, and silent realities of the starving villages that Welsh journalist Gareth Jones witnessed.

Journalistic Cover-up: Jones’ struggle to get his story published is true. He faced immense pushback from Western politicians and was actively discredited by New York Times Moscow correspondent Walter Duranty, who covered up the famine to protect Soviet interests. Duranty was the Moscow Bureau chief for the New York Times. The Times was then owned by Walter Ochs, who was married to Rabbi Isaac Wise’s daughter.

    What is exaggerated or fictionalized:

The “George Orwell” Connection: The framing device involving George Orwell (Eric Blair) writing Animal Farm is highly anachronistic. Orwell did not meet Jones to discuss the Soviet Union during the timeframe of the trip; the book was published more than a decade later, though Orwell was heavily influenced by Jones’ legacy.

Sensationalized Details: Gareth Jones’ own family and biographers have noted that the film invents certain sensational aspects. For instance, Jones did not sneak around taking part in scenes of cannibalism as the film implies, and he had no romantic subplot. This is how you honor Mr Jones?

A Narrow Focus: The film centers heavily on Ukraine, but Jones’ actual reports detailed widespread starvation across vast regions of the Soviet Union, including Kazakhstan and parts of Siberia. There’s no where the Bolsheviks did not go, to cause havoc, despair & ruin.
