It is difficult to understand that an 88-year-old person in Latvia can find themselves in a situation where they are deprived of their citizenship, their livelihood and any safety net just because of bureaucratic formalities.
This story is about an 88-year-old woman who has lived in Latvia for more than 50 years. She has built her life here, worked here, and aged here.
However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she did not renew her passport in time, and the document expired.
Bureaucracy goes crazy
As a result, it was assumed that she had not stayed in Latvia for the last five years, although in fact she has not gone anywhere and has been living in her own home all this time.
The Citizenship and Migration Affairs Office refused a permanent residence permit. The Saldus County Social Service in Latvia and the head of the parish administration are trying to arrange a temporary residence permit.
However, the process has dragged on for more than two months.
No humanity for White Christians
The Ministry of the Interior refuses to apply humanitarian considerations, which are permitted by law to grant a residence permit, because the aunt does not need care or supervision.
During this time, the woman’s pension has been suspended. Her only income was a pension of about 400 euros, but now she has not even received it for 3 months.
Exiled for being poor
To receive a residence permit, she is required to prove income of at least the minimum wage. But how can a person whose pension is only 400 euros and whose pension payment has already been suspended do this? It is a vicious circle from which it is impossible to escape.
Help in the community
The social service and the parish administration are also powerless. The employees are trying to help, but the law prohibits providing social assistance to a person with a temporary residence permit.
They help humanely. They buy food with their own money. But this is not state aid. This is the compassion of fellow human beings.
88-year-old exiled
And then the question arises: what does the state expect from an 88-year-old woman? She came to Latvia from Moldova in her early youth and has lived here all her life.
Due to her living conditions, other documents were not processed at one time. Has she really become a threat to the state now, at the age of 88? Are the only alternatives really to starve to death or wait for border guards to take her to the border, because she has a Russian passport?
I don’t want to die
The woman herself says only one sentence: ‘I don’t want to die.’
Can anyone honestly say that in this case the exception provided for by the law for humanitarian reasons cannot be applied? What exactly is she threatening the state with?
This is not a story about politics.
This is a story about humanity. On whether we can still see the person in the application of the law.

We are so saddened about this lady , No one should put to this cruelty and injustice. So in USA, Canada people will go to live in hotels.. Rental apartments like they want like hackers all info then deny you. The USA system is so unfair millions of people go to sleep in their cars. We need better system of Capitalism that good for all not for top 10 percents? I call it human capitalism.

Americans speak about high food , rent prices?
Why people are renting storage’s and use it as a hotel without washrooms, etc… ? Is this normal or abnormal what would you do if you arrive same situations as them? High rent prices eventually means more of same? Is Martial Law coming sooner to all world?
