New Year’s flash mob. 500 people in the UK sang the song synchronously via video link.

In the UK, 500 people sang a folk song at the same time via video link, dedicating an unusual flash mob to the New Year and hopes that all the bad things were left behind.

Folk group The Longest Johns planned that no more than 100 people would join their action. “But when almost 500 applications were submitted, we had to reconsider our plans!” – the group members commented on the video clip. Source

Leave Her, Johnny
British Sailors Song
Seán DagherMichiel Schrey

I thought I heard the Old Man say:
"Leave her, Johnny, leave her."
Tomorrow you will get your pay,
And it's time for us to leave her.

Leave her, Johnny, leave her!
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her!
For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her.

Oh, the wind was foul and the sea ran high.
"Leave her, Johnny, leave her!"
She shipped it green and none went by.
And it's time for us to leave her.

Leave her, Johnny, leave her!
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her!
For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her.

I hate to sail on this rotten tub.
"Leave her, Johnny, leave her!"
No grog allowed and rotten grub.
And it's time for us to leave her.

Leave her, Johnny, leave her!
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave…

  1. This is an amazing technological feat to pull this off so beautifully, and what a great song. However, we must do these things TOGETHER, in person! Let us not allow ourselves to be pulled into the “internet of all things” even in the culture and music world! (((They))) do not want us singing together, because they know how powerful the experience of singing together is. It transforms us, it binds us together, it nourishes us, our spirits sour when we sing together. So the public “health experts” tell us “do not sing together, it is dangerous to sing together”. These online music endeavours, as wonderful as they are, will lull us into pseudo-satisfaction, but are a poor substitute for what we all crave and need – human contact.
