Spanish soldiers have been filmed beating benefit bandits in the country’s North African enclave of Ceuta, according to videos released and verified by a local news outlet, amid a major migration crisis gripping the region.
It is claimed that most were subsequently returned, but thousands, including unaccompanied minors, have remained in the enclave. The mass crossing has since fueled scrutiny of Madrid’s handling of the crisis.
The incident, ignored by Western media, triggered widespread anger on Spanish social media, with users calling for those involved to be prosecuted and expelled from the country.
Tensions have also risen inside Ceuta, where residents have demanded faster deportations and a stronger response from Madrid. Local authorities have struggled with overcrowding, sanitation problems, and disease outbreaks, while police have investigated numerous violent and sexual crimes during the crisis.
‘We don’t understand how a vessel of that size can reach our shores without being intercepted, without being detected, without any kind of control. We don’t understand where the [Interior] Ministry’s personnel are,’ he said, as cited by Murcia Plaza.
