The term ‘old soul’ refers to a soul that has experienced many lifetimes. Over these long periods of time, the soul gathers wisdom, experiences different circumstances, and learns through both joy and difficulty.

An old soul may carry a certain depth, perspective, and emotional maturity into a new incarnation. They often have a calm and thoughtful nature and may understand life in ways that can seem unusual or surprising to others.

Ancient Wisdom

However, being an ‘old soul’ doesn’t necessarily mean being more evolved, more spiritual, or better than another soul. Soul development is much more nuanced than that.

A soul can have many lifetimes behind it and still choose an incarnation to explore very specific lessons, challenges, or experiences.

Young Souls

Young souls, sometimes called new souls, are generally understood to be at an earlier stage of their reincarnation journey.

They may be exploring some of the more foundational experiences of being human, such as relationships, emotions, identity, survival, choice, and learning through cause and effect. They may be more curious about the physical world and may learn through trial and error.

Equal Souls

But this doesn’t mean that a young soul is less valuable or less conscious. Every soul has its own journey, and there is no need to compare one soul to another.

Some souls may develop quickly in certain areas while taking much longer in others. A soul can be very experienced in one type of lesson and relatively inexperienced in another.

It is also possible for a soul to intentionally choose a more challenging incarnation.

Someone may come into a life that appears difficult from the outside not because their soul is ‘less evolved,’ but because they have chosen particular experiences that will allow them to understand something on a deeper level.

Soul’s Longer Journey

This is why I believe it is important not to use the terms ‘old soul’ and ‘young soul’ as labels or hierarchies. They are simply ways of describing different stages within the soul’s much larger journey.

One of the clearest examples of an old soul can sometimes be seen in children. Some children seem to carry an unusual depth and maturity from a very young age.

They may ask profound questions about life, death, consciousness, or the meaning of existence.

They may prefer meaningful conversations over superficial interactions and sometimes seem strangely disconnected from the trends and behaviors typical of their age group.

Wise beyond their years

People often describe these children as ‘wise beyond their years.’ From a spiritual perspective, this can be understood as a soul bringing the wisdom and experiences of previous incarnations into its current life.

At the same time, every incarnation is a new experience. Even an old soul enters a human body without consciously remembering everything it has experienced before. The purpose is not simply to repeat the past, but to experience life from a new perspective, make new choices, and continue learning.

Not a competition

Ultimately, there is no race between souls. Each soul has its own timing, its own experiences, and its own path of development.

Some souls may have lived hundreds of thousands of incarnations, while others may be at the beginning of their journey.

What matters is not how ‘old’ a soul is, but what it chooses to experience, understand, and learn through each lifetime.  Let readers know what you think
