FRIENDS FOR LIFE

FRIENDS FOR LIFE

.

I have five friends, who walk with me,

Companions of life’s road

We laugh and talk, and they comfort me,

When I am weak and cold.

Peace of mind, protection too,

Where e’r my feet have trod,

My Guardian Angel, Conscience too,

My Family Tree and God.

.

I can’t recall precisely,

When we ventured on life’s road,

I felt their presence with me,

As I struggled with my load.

Yet I recall their whispers,

Their encouragement to go.

Be brave they said, the world awaits,

There’s much for you to know.

.

I walked and met my angel,

She brought me then to know,

My Family Tree to which I’ll be,

Another branch to grow.

Another limb to give it strength,

To give it seed and life,

To make it strong and guard from wrong,

Secure against all strife.

.

So, when I bend before the gale,

Or ‘neath my weight in snow,

I tell myself of branches old,

That once shared burdens so.

They kept their strength when gales would rent,

And always bore the strain,

Yet none that passed before my way,

Would snap to break the chain.

.

And then my friend my Conscience,

Who tells me right from wrong,

He has a sense of humour,

Yet patience fine and strong.

I make this friend my master,

My mentor and my guide,

He smiles and knows the things I do,

He is the voice inside.

.

So, if I’m ever tempted to sin or into debt,

If I ever contemplate an action I’ll regret.

He pulls me up quite sharply,

Reminds me of the price,

That will be paid if I should fall,

To vanity or vice.

.

The third friend in our party,

A tower of strength indeed,

I count my Guardian Angel,

Who’s there when there’s a need.

When danger calls, she takes my hand,

To lead a safer way,

And guides me through the pitfalls,

Of journey’s night and day.

.

This brings me to my Father,

He makes our party five,

He helps us reach our goals in life,

The things for which we strive,

He watches over all of us,

He conquers every fear,

He brings me joy when I am sad,

And wipes away the tear.

.

God is who I answer to,

He leads us on through strife,

His presence and his love is there,

To lead to better life.

And when this earthly pause is o’er,

He calls me to report,

He’ll be the judge and witness,

To each action, every thought,

.

He’ll gently coax and seek the truth,

To clean away all sin,

He’ll lead me to a better life,

And greater goals to win.

We each will share the cross I bear,

Take pride to conquer woe,

Recalling love and victory,

The trials where e’r we go.

Supported, given comfort,

Wherever we have trod,

My Guardian Angel, Conscience too,

My Family Tree and God.
