Throughout the years, the world has changed dramatically. Populations have grown, cities have flourished, technology has taken the world by storm, and new industries have helped bolster economies and extend life expectancy.
Another way that the world has changed is that some countries have ceased to exist. Some, like Germany, although they retain their name have altered beyond all recognition from the historical perception of pre-war Germany and is today far from being the Land of Blood and Soil’.

Modern Germany, like England, has changed so much due to occupation and immigration that a name change might be considered appropriate. Richard Littlejohn, a British newspaper columnist calls Britain, Absurdistan. Perhaps what is known as Germany might today be renamed, West Ottoman.
There are a number of reasons that nations no longer exist. Some countries, such as East Germany and West Germany, merged to form one country.

Other countries have split apart, such as the Persian Empire, which encompassed land from the Mediterranean Sea to India before becoming Persia and then, later, Iran. Other nations have changed their names, such as Ceylon, which became Sri Lanka in 1972.
There is no real country known as Israel. Israel is the Zionist title for ‘Jewish Occupied Palestine’. Palestine has ceased to exist. R.I.P. An irony is that since 1948 when the Zionist state of Israel was founded, six million Palestinians have perished. Otherwise, its peoples are scattered around the world in exile. There are many nations that have ceased to exist throughout history. Some of the most well-known include:
Abyssinia is now known as Ethiopia, Austria-Hungary: a region that included Austria, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic, and the Balkans ceased to exist following World War I.

Basutoland is now Lesotho, Bengal part of India and Bangladesh, Burma is now known as Myanmar, Catalonia today is an autonomous region of Spain, Ceylon is today Sri Lanka and Champa is now a territory in Vietnam.
Corsica is now a department of France, East Germany and West Germany is now known as Germany but might well change its name to Ottoman.

East Pakistan is now known as Bangladesh, England (130,000 sq. km) is now part of the United Kingdom (243,000 sq. km). Gran Colombia was what is now Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Hawaii was a sovereign country until annexed to the United States.
New Grenada: now known as the Republic of Colombia, Newfoundland is now a Canadian province. North Yemen and South Yemen united in 1990 as Yemen, Ottoman Empire: once included parts of Hungary, Russia, Turkey, the Middle East, the Balkans, and North Africa, Persia is today Iran, Prussia: once included parts of Germany and Poland but was disbanded by the military triumphant Allies following World War II.

Rhodesia is now Zimbabwe, Scotland part of the United Kingdom, Siam is Thailand, Sikkim now part of North India, South Vietnam: now known as Vietnam,
Southwest Africa is now known as Namibia. Tanganyika united with Zanzibar to form Tanzania, Texas was an independent country until annexed by the United States, Tibet is now an autonomous region of China, Transjordan is today Jordan. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was divided into 15 countries in 1991.

The United Arab Republic has split into Syria and Egypt, Vermont: was an independent country until it entered the U.S. as a state, Wales is now part of the United Kingdom, West Florida: included Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi but as a country only lasted for 90 days.
Western Samoa: now known as Samoa, Yugoslavia: split into six countries in the 1990s. The Belgian Congo morphed into Zaire and is now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zanzibar: united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania. To add to the turmoil, many countries like Germany, Poland, Hungary and Romania have been dismembered and great swathes of their territories are ceded to neighbouring states. Source
