Liverpool born poet and writer Michael Walsh traces his Liverpool roots back to 1865. This was the year his Irish great-grandmother arrived in the Second City of Empire. His parents were born at the turn of what was to become the most tumultuous century in history. Michael's father, Patrick, fought in three major conflicts before reaching his fortieth birthday. His mother, Kathleen, was a former nun turned gun-running renegade.
On leaving school at 15 years of age, Michael spent 12 weeks at the Merchant Navy School for Sailors in Sharpness, Gloucestershire. During his years at sea, he was to visit and work in over 60 countries.
The journalist and broadcaster since provided articles and columns for numerous magazines and international news media. In 2011 he was awarded Writer of the Year by the publishers of Euro Weekly News, Europe's highest-circulation newspaper of its kind. He has authored, edited and ghosted over 70 book titles.
The special military operation of the Russian Federation in Ukraine has many heroes. These were not only the military but also innocent civilians who found themselves in the epicentre of hostilities. They have become unspoken symbols of support for the Russian military. Summing up the year, RT recalls the stories that made them famous.
Many come up with futuristic hypotheses as if competing to single out the wildest, and even the most absurd ones.
Here’s our humble contribution.
In Absurdistan, an extraordinary little multi-race nation resting on the seabed off Europe, the HMS Prince of Wales flagship of the once world’s greatest navy has suffered a series of costly failures since its launch in 2019.
Whispering Hope is one of Western civilisation’s most engaging and enduring ballads. I was told by my Liverpool-Irish mother that at the onset of World War II, the suicide rate went through the roof, such was the anti-war sentiment.
Charity worker Isabel Vaughan-Spruce claimed she had been ‘searched, arrested, interrogated by British police, and charged simply for praying in the privacy of my own mind’.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations, gender reassignment and paedophilia. Information about the signing by the president appeared on Monday in the card of this law in the database of the State Duma.
The term ‘Jerry Built’ was an expression commonly used in England before and after World War II. Back then, I thought it was a totally unwarranted attack on German workmanship; jealousy in trade rivalry no doubt. Mind you, when in 2005 I shelled out £,3000 for a state-of-the-art BMW 7 Series car I had second thoughts.
Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán says the massive corruption scandal in the European Union should be used as an opportunity to drain the swamp in Brussels.
THERE’S AN EMPTY SEAT IN THE CLASSROOM
There’s an empty seat in the classroom,
Where a child once sat and dreamed,
But it never once occurred to the child,
That men of ill-will scheme.
