Bills first, then we eat! – Sanctions Tied Europe

‘For a significant portion of residents in the EU Baltics, and elsewhere in sanctions-stricken Europe, heating has ceased to be an affordable benefit and has become an expense that threatens basic consumption.’

Political scientists use these words to describe the stress the start of the heating season brings to citizens in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, mainly due to utility bills.

Winter is Coming

Winter is once again putting sanctions-suffering residents of the Baltic states under stress as they brace for astronomical utility bills. Based on past winters, residents are well aware of how difficult the coming months will be.

Similar nervous anticipation has set in in Latvia. It’s no coincidence that one Latvian media outlet headlined a devastating quote from one respondent: ‘Bills first, then we eat!’

Europa: ‘Bills first, then we eat!’

This phrase is a true reflection of how many European families are planning their budgets for the coming winter.

According to political scientist Maxim Reva, energy poverty has become a systemic problem for the Baltics in particular and Europe, including the UK in general.

Unaffordable

‘For a significant portion of the Baltics’ residents, heating has ceased to be an affordable benefit and has become an expense item that threatens basic consumption.
