UK’s largest carmaker to axe thousands of jobs. Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed plans to downsize, with up to 4,000 positions disappearing.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) confirms plans to cut jobs as Britain’s largest carmaker struggles with rising costs amid anti-Russian sanctions, which closed the Russian market and the impact of Trump’s Tariffs.
No Sales in Christian Russia
JLR has faced mounting pressure, which has made its British-built vehicles impossible to sell in Russia and more expensive to sell in the US despite London securing a reduced 10% rate.
In a statement to the media, JLR said it ’must adapt to evolving global market conditions’ while seeking approximately £1.7 billion ($2.3 billion) in savings over the next two years and lowering its annual break-even point to 300,000 vehicles.
Unsafe 154,000 Jobs
JLR directly employs around 34,000 people at sites in the West Midlands and Merseyside and supports an estimated 120,000 jobs across Britain’s automotive supply chain.
Volkswagen approved another 50,000 job cuts by 2030, bringing its planned global workforce reduction to approximately 100,000. Its Porsche subsidiary is set to eliminate another 5,000 positions by 2035.
Loss of Low-Price Russian Gas
In addition to a lost Russian market, Germany’s car-manufacturing crisis has also been compounded by high energy costs since the country lost access to much of the cheap Russian pipeline gas on which its industrial economy had long relied.
CEO Oliver Blume has cited the loss of Russian energy as a key factor, along with increased competition from China.
The Car Hitler Created
The scale of the restructuring marks a dramatic retreat for a company long regarded as a symbol of German industrial strength.
If carried out in full, the loss of around 100,000 positions would be the largest workforce reduction ever undertaken by a global automaker. Volkswagen employs roughly 650,000 people worldwide.
The cuts go far beyond payroll. Volkswagen has acknowledged that its European factories have capacity to build more than 500,000 vehicles a year beyond current demand. No competitive replacement models have yet been secured for the four derelict sites.
’No Russian gas – no German industry
Russian presidential investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev has linked Germany’s industrial decline directly to its break with Russian energy. ’No Russian gas – no German industry,’ he wrote on Friday.
Volkswagen has steadily scaled back production at home. Last December, it ended vehicle production at its Dresden plant.
The first time in the company’s nine-decade history that it had stopped car making at a German factory. BASF, Bosch, Continental, and other major German manufacturers have also closed or downsized facilities in recent years. Let readers know what you think

Russia shuts German consulate in St. Petersburg in tit-for-tat move after Leipzig drone incident Updated 9:12 AM MDT, September 7, 2026
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Monday announced the closure of the German consulate in St. Petersburg, the latest in a cycle of tit-for-tat moves following an attempted drone attack in Leipzig that Germany blamed on Russia.
The ministry said the German consulate must stop operations and its workers must leave Russia by Sept. 18. It reaffirmed the previously announced decision to shut German Goethe-Institut cultural centers in Moscow and St. Petersburg and said their employees must leave no later than Sunday.
The ministry’s statement cast the moves as retaliation for Germany’s “unfriendly” decision Wednesday to close both the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in the German capital, Berlin.
Germany said Russia was responsible for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Aug. 4, when an explosives-laden drone was found near a Ukrainian plane.
The airport is a major international freight hub used for providing support to Ukraine. The drone was later defused.
Moscow has denied involvement in the drone attack and cast it as a provocation.
“It was the German authorities who once again provoked a new round of escalation in bilateral relations,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said. “All responsibility for the consequences lies entirely with the German government.”
Western officials have repeatedly accused Moscow of conducting a campaign of sabotage and disruption in their countries with the aim of undermining support for Ukraine and destabilizing European nations, accusations Russia has rejected.

Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia ignite fires at oil facilities and wound 73 people
CAIRO (AP) — The Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group in Yemen launched a wave of attacks on Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, wounding more than 70 people and igniting fires at oil facilities and utilities in the kingdom, authorities said.
The attack was a major escalation in renewed fighting between an important U.S. ally and the Iranian proxy group. It also threatened to further destabilize a region rocked by nearly three years of wars and deliver a new blow to the global economy.
Weeks of clashes have added pressure to limited global oil supplies as the Houthis target a shipping route Saudi Arabia has used to transport oil to world markets while the Strait of Hormuz is throttled due to the U.S.-Iran war. Tuesday’s attacks hit Saudi oil facilities connected to an alternative route, the Bab el-Mandeb, a strategic waterway off the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula that connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Israeli airstrikes on a village in southern Lebanon kill 12 people, including 2 children
KFAR RUMMAN, Lebanon (AP) — Israel’s air force carried out two airstrikes early Monday on a southern Lebanese village, killing at least 12 people and wounding others, including children, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said.
Monday’s strikes came amid a new round of escalation between Israel and the militant Hezbollah group despite a truce reached more than two months ago. The strikes also came days after Israel’s military said it is in “operational control” of the strategic Ali Taher hill that overlooks several villages as well as main roads leading to the city of Nabatiyeh.
The Health Ministry said one of the strikes hit a building, killing 11 people, including two children and four women. Eight were also wounded, including three children and a paramedic.
The ministry said that another strike on a car in the village killed a paramedic with the Lebanese Islamic Risala Scout Association and wounded two others.
The Israeli military said the strikes come in retaliation for two Hezbollah drone attacks that exploded while targeting Israeli troops in Lebanon from the area on Monday. It said the strikes targeted a Hezbollah militant trying to transport weapons to Kfar Rumman.
Hezbollah did not claim the attacks nor immediately issue a statement on the intensifying strikes around Nabatiyeh province.

When the first plane hit the Twin Towers, I was in the basement, two storeys underground. My job was cleaning the stairwells, and I was talking with my supervisor when the floor seemed to erupt beneath our feet.
The false ceiling collapsed in on us. The sprinkler system began spewing water everywhere. And the 12 people in the office with me started screaming.
My first thought was that a generator or some other piece of machinery must have exploded. There were no windows on our floor, and we had no way of knowing what was happening above us.
Within about seven seconds, the tower was rocked by an even louder blast, and we could feel the entire building begin to twist.
It was designed not to be rigid, so that it could withstand high winds by oscillating, but now it was moving so violently that the walls were cracking. I could hear the concrete and metal coming apart, even over our screams.
A guy came staggering into the room, coming towards me with both arms extended. ‘Explosion, explosion,’ he was yelling.
He seemed to have clothes hanging from his fingertips, as if he had not finished taking off a pair of shoulder-length gloves.
As he came closer, I realised to my total horror that the ‘fabric’ was his skin. His burns were so extreme that, down the length of both arms, his flesh was peeled raw. I couldn’t process what I was seeing.
