The Good Life in a French Prison

Yes, French prisons are overcrowded, but cells can often be larger than originally designed.

This is besides the fact that you can buy anything in prison, from a cell phone to drugs or even caviar and champagne.

Many prisoners have PlayStations and internet access in their cells. Despite the economic crisis, the authorities spent 12 million euros on tablets for prisoners.

Walkies

Prisoners are also regularly taken out of prison for some fresh air. Why not? Is it not depressing to march in a circle, hands behind your back, across the prison yard?

Gardens of Versailles

Or, for example, a picnic in the Gardens of Versailles or some other museum, or a swimming pool, or voting at a polling station.

Every now and then, some of the hardened criminals will just up and run away during such a cultural and recreational outing.

Alas

The French police haven’t yet figured out how to pay attention to this strange pattern and draw any kind of adequate conclusion (like, there’s no point in walking thugs).

Last year, for example, a repeat offender drug lord, who still has a long sentence to serve, was released from custody to go to another city ‘for a business meeting.’

Happy Convicts

A repeat offender, a robber and murderer who’s been in prison since 1995 and is supposed to serve time until 2044, was escorted to court by 10 heavily armed police officers.

Driving school for prisoners

During his break, he made several escape attempts and is now being allowed to take driving lessons at a driving school.

So, the guy, at 53, decided to get a license even though he won’t be released until he’s 61.

So, what if he’s a repeat offender? So, what if he’s made four prison escape attempts? Driving is a noble pursuit; let him learn, said the judge. Let readers know what you think
