MICHAEL WALSH. I take no pride in saying that the male of the species is often the inferior of the species. The alpha male is propaganda just as is the myth that the lion is the king of the jungle.

The savannah lion is a symbol of raw power, courage and nobility. The predator’s formidable strength and nomadic independence inspire us all.  

The truth is rather different

Lions, the most bone idle of the big cats, spend 16 to 20 hours each day sleeping or resting.  He and two or three male relatives share a harem of up to 10 lionesses as the pride listlessly roam the savannah. 

Anti-Social Behavior

Lions, when they are awake, constantly squabble and fight among themselves. They cannot be trusted with the cubs; all that is expected of the males is that they defend their territory.

But as lionesses are keen as mustard in this department too, you could say that the alpha male lion is surplus to requirement.

Alpha Male is superfluous to requirement

The shopping is 90 per cent done by the lionesses, but males eat first and get the best cuts.  On the rare occasion male lions do hunt, they get it right about 50 per cent of the time.

Fornicators

What do lions do during the few hours they are conscious?  They flirt with the lionesses.  At fornication, all male lions are Oscar winners, but in terms of endurance, the male of the species leaves much to be desired.

His amorous activity is exhausted in less than one minute.  In fairness, he quickly recovers his interest every 15-minutes or so and keeps it up for five days. 

Given strong leadership and motivation, every man has the potential to be an alpha male.

However, by removing it, you discover something not quite as noble. Men excel at doing what they want to do; women excel at what needs to be done; that is the mane difference. Send us your comments
