MICHAEL WALSH ASKS It is – 11C in Moscow, and in Irkutsk it is -34C. As usual, head of state Vladimir Putin is likely to take a dip in an ice hole this Epiphany, January 19, 2026
Daria Bogomolova is a general practitioner at the SberZdorovye medical company. She spoke to the media about the health risks of swimming in cold water. She also discussed who should avoid it.
The doctor noted that studies demonstrate the benefits of swimming in cold water. These include improved sleep quality. They also suggest a subjective improvement in overall well-being.
‘It’s important to understand that these positive effects may be observed in trained individuals. But for people with chronic conditions, this procedure can pose serious health risks.
When immersed in ice-cold water, the body of an untrained person is subjected to severe stress. The body activates protective mechanisms aimed at conserving heat and maintaining vital functions.

For example, blood vessels in the skin and superficial tissues constrict, which reduces heat loss.
The heart rate also increases to maintain circulation in the cold. Furthermore, stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, are released, mobilizing the body,’ the doctor explained.
According to her, another major risk is hypothermia, which increases the likelihood of infections.
Cardiovascular reactions are also possible. Even in those without chronic heart disease, a sudden change in temperature triggers vascular spasms.
These spasms can cause irregular heartbeats and high blood pressure. They can also lead to acute conditions such as cold shock and even cardiac and respiratory arrest.
If a person regularly practices hardening, such as cold-water dousing, it can be beneficial. Taking a gradual and moderate approach is important. Then ice-hole bathing can be beneficial.

For example, immersion in cold water temporarily improves blood circulation. It stimulates the release of endorphin, the hormone that produces happiness. It also increases resistance to temperature fluctuations and improves thermoregulation,’ Bogomolova explained.
The doctor reminded that swimming in an ice hole can be dangerous to the health of people with certain illnesses.
Thus, it is contraindicated for patients with cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, arrhythmia, and coronary heart disease.
Ice-hole bathing is not recommended for people with respiratory conditions, including bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis.
The same applies to patients with neurological, oncological, and rheumatic diseases, endocrine disorders, and those with open wounds.
‘Immersion in ice holes is also not recommended for people with inflammatory conditions. These include acute respiratory viral infections, bacterial infections, or genitourinary diseases like pyelonephritis and cystitis.
Elderly people, pregnant women, children, and people under the influence of alcohol should not swim in ice holes. The specialist noted this important warning.
