Journalists from 404 Media received access to a sales and marketing presentation that the American media giant Cox Media Group (CMG) sent to its partners.

Among the partners are such companies as Google, Facebook*, Amazon and Bing (owned by Microsoft). The presentation talks about a certain Active Listening technology, which the above-mentioned companies use to eavesdrop on users around the world.

‘Cox Media Group has been a Google Premium Partner since the program’s inception 11 years ago. The company was the first media partner for Amazon Advertising and was one of the first four companies in the world to become Facebook* Marketing Partners,’ Cox Media Group said in a presentation.

According to the description, Active Listening is a technology that allows companies to use AI to collect keywords that a person says near a smartphone, laptop, tablet or other device with a microphone and internet access.

I personally recall writing an email to a friend in which supposedly private email I mentioned I intended to take a short break in Portugal. This email was for my friend’s information only. So how come my feed from there on was stuffed with advertisements for ‘Best Stay Hotels’ – in Portugal?

The collected information is used to offer more relevant advertising that the user will eventually see in the social media feed, search engine and other media resources.

The reaction of the companies that were caught eavesdropping was immediate. For example, Facebook* said that it had ‘begun to check’ this information.

Google spies removed the mention of Cox Media Group from all its sites, and Amazon representatives denied everything and said that the company does not use Active Listening technology.
