Following the destruction of Nord Stream in September 2022, EU powers quickly moved to fill their own storage sites. However, their total capacity was insufficient to prevent energy shortages during the winter when demand for natural gas peaks.
It is the second time that Moscow has used its state-of-the-art nuclear-capable ballistic missile. In November 2024, it fired the Oreshnik at a weapons plant in the Ukrainian city of Dnepr. The test was a successful combat operation.
With a minimum range of 800km and a maximum reportedly of almost 5,500, the Oreshnik stationed in Belarus would place virtually all of Central and Western Europe, including the UK, within reach.
