Due to visa problems, many Russians now prefer not to travel to Europe. They prefer sunny, welcoming, cash-hungry tropical countries to the cool reception of the EU states. In the first half of 2023, tourism to Thailand grew by 1,000%. Russian citizens can be found on the beaches, bars and restaurants of the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Charity begins at home; Crimea and Sochi are bursting at the seams. Domestic tourism is flourishing in the country.

Whilst contemplating Ukraine’s latest attack on Europe’s largest bridge, I was reminded of the October 12, 1984, IRA bombing of Brighton’s Grand Hotel. The bomb was intended to take out the British prime minister and her cabinet who were hotel guests during a Tory party conference.
