The departure of American troops from Afghanistan is being lamented as a defeat. Not quite: Not from the point of view of the US military arms making complex and the political elite who invested in war. For them, the Afghan occupation has been a thunderous success. Trillions of taxpayer dollars have flowed through their budgets and profits over the two decades in which despite public cynicism and disapproval they successfully maintained the operation.

Sweden is at the top of Europe – when it comes to the number of deaths caused by firearms. Sweden’s rate is two and a half times the European average. The vast majority of victims are men between the ages of 20 and 30. In the past, the country did not experience such numbers at all. Migration is to blame, even though the police do not officially disclose the identity of the victims.

As of Monday, I, like millions of other people living in France, will officially be a second-class citizen. Going to a restaurant, a museum, a concert, a cinema, or a swimming pool, having a drink on a café terrace, boarding a fast train, or visiting a relative in hospital or a home for the elderly, will be allowed only to those who have been fully ‘vaccinated,’ who have recovered from COVID less than 6 months ago, or who can show a negative PCR or a genic test passed less than 48 hours ago.
