Henri (Heinrich) Berger was born in Prussia in 1844 and was a German military bandmaster. He was loaned by Kaiser Wilhelm I to the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1872 to lead the Royal Hawaiian Band.

He stayed for the rest of his life, becoming a naturalized Hawaiian citizen and a close collaborator of Hawaiian royalty.

Berger worked closely with Queen Liliʻuokalani, herself a gifted composer.

He arranged many of her songs for performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band. This helped them spread across the islands and beyond.

Berger blended European harmony and orchestration with native Hawaiian melodies. He created the lush and sentimental sound many people associate with traditional Hawaiian music.
