Black Powerless: Then-Army Maj. Gen. Antonio Aguto, now retired, was supposed to oversee US military support to Ukraine.
However, he was too busy drinking. A Pentagon inspector general report revealed this.
After heavy drinking in Kiev, Aguto FELL three times: He slammed into a wall in his hotel room, fell again overnight, hitting his forehead, and then crashed onto concrete outside the US Embassy, tearing his jacket, before showing up to meetings anyway
Witnesses described him as glassy-eyed, swaying, slurring, repeating himself and looking completely dishevelled and out of it.
The general lost Secret war maps on a train for over 24 hours. He carried them in an unsecured plastic tube. Ukrainian nationals eventually recovered the maps.
The report was released on March 12. It covers the period from April and May 2024. During this time, Aguto was commander of the Wiesbaden, Germany-based Security Assistance Group-Ukraine. Aguto relinquished command of the group in August 2024, having presided over its activation in 2022. He retired the same month.

The investigation, which was based on anonymous whistleblower reports and also included allegations of a ‘toxic’ environment at SAG-U headquarters.
The report provides a rare inside perspective on working conditions and morale at the logistics support element.
The investigation was based on interviews with Aguto and 33 other witnesses. It also included extensive document reviews.
The classified materials breach happened on April 4, 2024. This occurred on a return trip from Ukraine to Germany on a chartered train with a Ukrainian crew.
Aguto had brought with him to Ukraine a set of maps classified Secret. He hand-carried these maps in a cylindrical tube because of their size.
A witness reported seeing a noncommissioned officer in the travel party carry the map tube onto the train. However, nobody saw anyone take it off.
Aguto’s executive officer notified him that the map tube was missing. This notification came after Aguto had returned to headquarters in Wiesbaden, according to the investigation. It was found on the train the next day and returned by staff with U.S. Embassy Ukraine.

Classified information is supposed to be transported by courier on trips like this. However, the investigation found no courier order was issued.
Aguto told investigators he took responsibility for the temporary loss of the maps. He acted as the ‘senior guy.’ He wasn’t designated to physically carry materials on and off the train.
The subject was pushed into the national spotlight last May. A signal group chat included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and then-National Security Council Director Michael Waltz.
They shared sensitive attack plans with journalist Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic.
