The Legend of Ireland’s Claddagh Ring

Richard Joyce, a fisherman from the village of Claddagh near Galway, was captured by pirates shortly before his wedding.

Sold into slavery in Algeria, he became the apprentice of a Moorish goldsmith.

Longing for the woman he left behind, he crafted a ring symbolizing love (heart), loyalty (crown), and friendship (hands).

He was freed in 1689. He returned to Galway, where his beloved had waited faithfully. He presented her with the ring. The lovers married, and the ring became a symbol of enduring devotion.

According to the legend, Mary Joyce was the widow of a wealthy Spanish merchant. She ploughed her inherited fortune into her local Galway community.

Once, whilst resting out on the moors, she was surprised to discover a beautiful finger ring on her lap. It could have been delivered only by the eagle soaring above.

This beautiful ring is still sold in Galway today. The Claddagh finger ring features a heart held in two hands.

A crown crests it, which signifies the motto, ‘Let Love and Friendship Reign’, according to popular belief.

Irish historians contend that the Claddagh ring belongs to a group of faith rings that date back to pre-medieval times.
