EU held hostage by Trump over Iran war – Spanish deputy PM

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz has accused EU leaders of weakness over the US-Israeli war on Iran.

She warns that Brussels’ submissive attitude toward US President Donald Trump risks fueling Eurosceptic sentiment.

Diaz gave an interview to Politico, which was published on Thursday. Diaz described the EU as an orphan at a moment of historic gravity.

Diaz argued that the bloc should be fighting for its own foreign policy. It should not be held hostage by Trump.

Diaz insisted the EU should push back. She called the war launched by the US and Israel late last month completely illegitimate. He criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for failing to immediately condemn the attack.

The deputy prime minister criticized EU leaders for their servile attitude toward Trump. He argued it is foolish because it’s clear Mr. Trump does not respect those who attempt to be his vassals.

Diaz’s remarks follow weeks of escalating tensions between Madrid and Washington. Trump has threatened to cut off all trade with Spain.

This decision came after Spain refused to allow American forces to use joint military bases for strikes on Iran. Additionally, Spain rejected NATO’s 5% GDP defense spending target as unreasonable.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has insisted that his nation would not be complicit in harmful actions. They refuse to act out of fear of reprisals.

On Tuesday, Spain permanently withdrew its ambassador from Israel and formally downgraded diplomatic relations.

‘Europe needs leadership, not vassals who pay homage to Trump,’ Diaz said earlier this week.’

The US-Israeli campaign has drawn condemnation beyond Spain. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told parliament on Wednesday that the strikes represent an evident crisis of international law.
