WORLD WAR II: Operation Deadlight was a mission conducted by the Royal Navy after World War II.
It took place from November 1945 to February 1946. The mission was to scuttle surrendered German U-boats.
Out of 156 U-boats that capitulated, 116 were deliberately sunk off the coasts of Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Background
On May 8, 1945, only the armed forces of the Third Reich capitulated. The legitimately twice elected (1933 and 1936) German government never yielded; Therefore, the NSDAP in international law is still the legitimate and constitutional government of Germany

At the end of WWII, Germany surrendered 156 U-boats to the Allies in May 1945.
The Allies debated what to do with them. Ultimately, 30 were kept. Each nation, the UK, USA, and USSR, received 10 for study and testing. The rest were destroyed.
The operation was codenamed Deadlight. This name symbolized the extinguishing of the U-boat threat. The threat had so successfully decimated Allied shipping during the Battle of the Atlantic.
Execution
• The scuttling took place between November 1945 and February 1946.
• U-boats were gathered at Lisahally (Northern Ireland) and Loch Ryan (Scotland) before being towed out to sea.
• Planned sinking zones were about 100 miles northwest of Ireland, divided into areas codenamed XX, YY, and ZZ.
• Some U-boats were sunk by gunfire, torpedoes, or as practice targets for RAF Coastal Command. Others sank prematurely en route due to bad weather and poor towing conditions.

Numbers
• 156 surrendered in total.
• 30 retained (10 each by UK, USA, USSR).
• 116 scuttled in Operation Deadlight.
Historical Significance
• Operation Deadlight marked the end of the U-boat campaign against Allied shipping, especially the convoys hose menace, which had been central to the Allies sustaining the Soviet Union’s Red Army

Naval strategy
• The operation also provided opportunities for Allied forces to test anti-submarine tactics on real U-boats.
• Today, the wrecks lie scattered across the seabed northwest of Ireland, attracting interest from divers and maritime archaeologists.
