What to Do When Encountering Dangerous Animals

STAY SAFE: A survival instructor explained how to behave when encountering an animal in the forest.

Much of the advice also applies to encounters of the wrong kind with domestic animals like aggressive dogs.

Animals fear man’s unique ability to utilize weapons such as sticks, ropes or chains, and rocks.

Holding an object in your hand can influence the outcome of an encounter with an aggressive beast. It will make the beast think twice.

Wildlife survival instructor Dmitry Aleshkin spoke with the media. He discussed steps to take to avoid a wild animal attack. These steps are crucial when you’re off track, such as in the forest.

‘The main goal when encountering a wild animal is to create fear in it.

This is done visually. You need to try to increase the area of your visual image. Pick up a stick, lift your jacket above you. To an animal, a person is a single object. And the larger they are, the more dangerous they are,’ he noted.

Aleshkin recalled that man is the only creature on earth capable of articulate speech.

‘For any animal, this is an unknown skill, although animals bark, growl and roar. And any uncertainty is fear. The survival instinct of any predatory animal is much stronger than the instinct to attack.

That is, before attacking, it considers how safe it is. You need to speak loudly, not yell,’ he warned.

According to him, metal objects can also be used to create noise.

‘The smell of gunpowder might help. If you have firecrackers, that will also work, as all animals freak out when alarmed by loud, extraordinary noise. Their ears are more sensitive.

Should you run? Any flight is a pretext for pursuit. Even if the predator wasn’t planning on catching you, it will start.

So, walk away while talking, holding a stick, and taking steps backwards. Never look the animal in the eye,’ he concluded.
