Get a Head Start with a Hat

YOUR HEALTH IS YOUR WEALTH: Going barefoot in freezing temperatures can lead not only to a cold but also to hair problems, according to immunologist Vladimir Bolibok.

According to the specialist, cold harms the scalp and hair follicles, which are responsible for hair growth and quality.

The main cause is impaired circulation. At low temperatures, the scalp’s blood vessels constrict to conserve heat, reducing the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the follicles.

]This makes hair thinner, more brittle, and can shorten its active growth phase. After a few months, this often leads to increased hair loss.

The second problem is a dry and irritated scalp. Frosty air and wind quickly dehydrate the scalp, causing flaking and dry dandruff.

Sometimes, in response, the sebaceous glands begin to produce more oil, causing the hair roots to become greasy and the scalp to become irritated.

In addition, temperature changes when returning from outside to a warm room create additional stress on the hair, increasing breakage and static.

People with skin conditions should be especially careful: cold can trigger an exacerbation of seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.

Bolibok also debunked the popular myth that going hatless ‘hardens’ your hair.

Did you know that the head is like a chimney: 70 per cent of your body’s heat escapes through the head. ‘Follicles can’t be trained by cold. Constant hypothermia is chronic stress, which only accelerates hair loss,’ the doctor emphasized.
