The Spanish Invasion – 6.000 BC

THE PEOPLE’S PRESS: A groundbreaking DNA study from Oxford University has rewritten the origins of Britain’s first peoples.

Researchers led by Professor Bryan Sykes discovered that the Celts, long believed to have descended from Central European tribes, actually came from Iberian fishermen who sailed north from Spain about 6,000 years ago.

By analyzing genetic samples from 10,000 volunteers across Britain and Ireland, the team found that people of Celtic ancestry share an almost identical DNA signature with coastal Spaniards, whose ancestors crossed the Bay of Biscay between 4,000 and 5,000 BC.

These seafaring Iberians brought with them early farming knowledge and maritime skills, forming the genetic foundation of what would later become the Celtic tribes.

Before their arrival, Britain had only a few thousand scattered inhabitants, populations that were soon absorbed into this new, larger community.

The research challenges long-held views of British identity, revealing that most people in the British Isles today descend from ancient Spanish settlers, not from later invasions.

It’s a story of migration, resilience, and ocean crossings, proof that Britain’s roots run deeper and farther south than anyone imagined. You can and should share this story on social media. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK
