Neurologist: Numbness and a ‘naughty tongue’ are sure signs of a stroke. Neurologist Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, an expert physician at the Gemotest laboratory, spoke with the media about the symptoms that may indicate a stroke.

‘A stroke, an acute cerebrovascular incident, develops suddenly, within seconds or minutes, and can then likely progress,’ the acclaimed doctor noted.

GET TO HOSPITAL – FAST. According to her, the sooner the patient is taken to the hospital, the higher the chance that doctors will be able to restore blood flow to brain tissue or identify and eliminate the cause of the intracerebral haemorrhage before critical changes occur.

The doctor also explained the symptoms that could indicate a stroke.

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR: These include sudden fatigue, numbness in the face, arm, or leg, often only on the right or left side, and ‘unintelligible speech’ (when a person tries to say one word but ends up saying something else that sounds similar, or something completely unintelligible).

Signs also consist of an inability to understand what people around them are saying, sudden vision loss in one or both eyes, a sudden onset of severe headache, or dizziness. Often, along with disorientation, a person may lose their balance or become clumsy, falling or bumping into objects.

TIME TO CALL AN AMBULANCE: ‘You can’t ignore any of these symptoms, wait for them to pass, or try to ‘cure’ them yourself with painkillers, a glass of water, or rest. You need to call an ambulance as soon as possible,’ Demyanovskaya emphasized.

It’s important to conduct a simple test: ask someone who is feeling unwell to smile, the doctor noted.
