A super-strong magnetic storm of a rare class G3 has begun on Earth, astronomers warn. The last time a storm of this scale was observed was in early June.

According to scientists’ forecasts, the situation will not fully return to normal until Thursday or Friday of this week. Who will be most affected by the powerful storm, and how we minimise unpleasant symptoms?

On Monday, September 15, the Earth was hit by the strongest magnetic storm in the last three months.

This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

‘A strong magnetic storm is observed on Earth, at a level close to G3. The event is registered against the background of a noticeable increase in the speed of the solar wind as a result of the planet entering the zone of a large coronal hole, the boundary of which the Earth crossed yesterday around midnight,’ the scientists note.

According to them, the event was generally predicted a few days ago, but ‘the strength of the storm was unexpected and is currently significantly exceeding the estimates.’ Thus, initially, experts expected a magnetic storm with a power of about G1.

‘Based on global catalogues, the last time an event of comparable and greater intensity occurred was on June 1–2 of this year, that is, more than three months ago,’ the Russian Academy of Sciences recalled. Please share this story on social media: TELL US WHAT YOU THINK
