SKYSCRAPER THAT GROWS FOOD, PURIFIES AIR AND SELF ENERGIZES

Spain is building a skyscraper that simultaneously grows food, generates energy, and purifies air.

Rising from the skyline of Valencia is a building that doesn’t just house stores, entertainment centres and apartments for residents, it breathes, grows, and cleans.

The Miramar (Sea Views) is Europe’s first fully self-sustaining biotecture skyscraper, designed to function like a living organism within the city.

Each floor of the tower features layers of hydroponic gardens that produce a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs, sufficient to feed up to 500 residents.

Integrated solar panels line the outer surfaces, and wind ducts channel airflow through micro-turbines embedded in the walls, generating electricity 24/7.

But the real innovation lies in the tower’s skin, a living façade made of algae tubes, mosses, and air-filtering membranes.

This porous outer shell actively captures CO₂, filters pollutants, and humidifies the air, creating a bubble of clean, oxygen-rich atmosphere around the tower.

The tower collects rainwater through slanted window awnings, channels it into underground tanks, and filters it for drinking and irrigation.

Wastewater is processed on-site through a bioreactor basement that uses microbes to clean and recycle every drop.

Inside, natural airflow, smart lighting, and AI climate control allow residents to live in full comfort without ever connecting to an external grid. Each apartment gets its own energy dashboard and food harvest log.

The Miramar Tower, which covers an area of 7,200 m2, is located in a university area, near the campuses of the Polytechnic University and the University of Valencia, and at the northern entrance to the city of Valencia. After years of disuse and abandonment, it has been converted into a green, bioclimatic, and sustainable space.

Vertical garden and photovoltaic glass to produce solar energy

The municipal project can transform this urban space with the installation of photovoltaic solar panels and shade pergolas with greenery.

A 45-meter vertical garden has been installed on the north-facing facade, and the south-facing facade is covered with photovoltaic glass for solar energy production. Drinking fountains are also being installed.

Furthermore, the roundabout will become a space for urban sports such as skateboarding, callisthenics, rollerblading, and parkour, as well as an area for artistic expressions linked to music, dance, and the visual arts.

It’s more than a building. It’s an ecosystem stacked vertically, with architecture as a living environment. You can share this story on social media:
