Evidence has emerged that many American troops and their families are living in terrible conditions at U.S. bases around the world.
The U.S. Department of Defense on a bloated budget plus eye-watering billions in aid to Israel, acknowledges that the problem exists, but has been unable to address it.
HOST: We have a new NBC exclusive that details the horrific conditions that some American service members’ families are forced to live in. I want to show you some photos provided by a group advocating for the service members.

Contaminated water has been found on some military bases, not just in the United States, but all over the world. Look at this, it’s actually water, even though it looks like coffee. But it’s water.
COURTNEY CUBY. That’s the big question. This isn’t a new issue, Jose. The Government Accountability Office released a report on this in September 2023.
It mentioned the things you mentioned: mold, sewage clogs in barracks bathrooms, air conditioners that weren’t working, and safety hazards like broken windows that were a potential problem for service members living in these facilities and barracks.
So, this is not a new problem, but these groups are a coalition of seven military advocacy groups. They are led by a group called Hots and Cuts. They have banded together and are calling on the Pentagon to start addressing these issues more aggressively.
Their argument is that, yes, the military knows about these problems, but it simply takes too long to fix them.
And in many cases, it prefers to contract out new barracks, which can take years and cost billions of dollars, rather than address the problem directly and quickly.
We got these photos in addition to some others from the NS group. It’s actually an app that allows service members and their families to upload photos and reviews of their housing, where they eat on military bases, so they can talk about some of these issues.
The MoD says that, of course, they introduced a new reporting structure earlier this month to try to address these issues, and that they are aware that they are indeed occurring.
