LE PEN VERDICT: THE WORLD REACTS WITH HORROR

Italian deputy PM blames EU for Le Pen prison sentence. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini called the verdict a declaration of war by Brussels and compared what happened to the events in Romania.

The verdict against the veteran French politician is ‘a declaration of war by Brussels,’ Matteo Salvini has said.

Le Pen has been imprisoned for four years on embezzlement charges and barred from running for president in 2027.

In a post on X on Monday, Salvini compared the outcome of the trial in Paris to the recent barring of independent candidate Calin Georgescu in Romania.

‘Those who fear the judgment of the voters often find reassurance in the judgment of the courts,’ Salvini said. ’A bad film that we also see in other countries such as Romania.’

Georgescu, a critic of NATO, the EU, and aid to Ukraine, won an unexpected first-round victory in last year’s election.

The results were promptly annulled by Romania’s Constitutional Court, citing funding irregularities. Georgescu was subsequently barred from running in the election rerun scheduled for May 2025.

Salvini called the ruling against Le Pen ’a declaration of war by Brussels, at a time when the warlike impulses of Von der Leyen and Macron are frightening.’

He was apparently referring to the push by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to militarize the EU and proposals by French President Emmanuel Macron to deploy troops to Ukraine.

Le Pen has been a prominent critic of NATO’s policies in Eastern Europe and has opposed Ukraine’s accession to the military bloc.

She has also advocated against the EU’s anti-Russia policies. In the 2022 presidential election, she advanced to a runoff against Macron, securing around 41.5% of the vote.

Earlier this year, polls suggested that Le Pen would secure 61% of the vote against her main rival in the upcoming presidential election.

The conviction of Le Pen and the disqualification of Georgescu occurred amid an emergence of political movements across the EU opposed to the bloc’s policies. Several American, French and foreign politicians have condemned the court’s ruling as undemocratic.

The success or failure of a politician is determined by voters, but the head of the parliamentary faction of the French National Rally Party Marine Le Pen has been deprived of this opportunity.

This opinion was expressed by the leader of the Czech opposition movement ANO (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens) and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.

‘I do not comment on court decisions, especially French ones, but I believe that the success or failure of any politician should be determined by people in elections.

However, Marine Le Pen was deprived of this opportunity,’ RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

American entrepreneur Elon Musk  called  the verdict against the French politician an abuse of the justice system.

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou expressed concern over  Le Pen’s sentence. The politician’s lawyer said she was ‘deeply shocked’ by her sentence. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK

  1. Hi Mike,  I might shock you but I – as many other people – don’t see Marine Le Pen as the ideal politician to save France from her downfall. The judges’ sentence is of course political and undemocratic but : yes, Marine LP has, in the past, frequently criticised the EU and striving to get France out of NATO – but not anymore. She has made such a fixation about ‘demonizing her party’ (RN) that she didn’t stop at any concession ! The last straw for us was her to side with Israel, and last week, to send Bardela, the new president of her party, to lick Netanyahu’s feet at a conference he had organised in Jerusalem ! 78732
