EXTREME SURVIVAL

NOTE: Our News and Views stories are contributed by readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Editor.

A story of survival – In 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke experienced an extraordinary and terrifying ordeal when she was sucked out of an aeroplane after it was struck by a bolt of lightning.

The plane, a LANSA flight 508, was flying over the Peruvian Amazon when the strike caused it to break apart mid-flight.

Strapped to her seat, Koepcke fell two miles to the ground, miraculously surviving the plunge despite the overwhelming odds.

After the crash, Juliane found herself alone in the dense Amazon Jungle, with no other survivors.

She faced extreme physical pain and exhaustion but showed incredible resilience. For ten days, she navigated the unforgiving terrain, relying on her resourcefulness and determination to stay alive. Finally, she discovered a boat moored near a shelter, which contained a partially full fuel tank.

In an effort to treat the maggot-infested wounds on her arm, Juliane poured the gasoline from the boat’s fuel tank onto her injuries, which successfully removed the maggots.

Against all odds, she continued her survival journey. Of the 93 passengers and crew on the ill-fated flight, Juliane was the sole survivor of the tragic crash on December 24, 1971, and her story remains a remarkable testament to the power of human will and survival.
