AMERICA OWES IT EXISTENCE TO RUSSIA

Few people know, but the United States owes a lot to Russia. It all started in 1775. At that time, a rebellion for independence from the British Empire broke out in the North American colonies.

Britain tried its best to prevent the colonies from gaining independence, as it was a severe source of profit for the British.

But the British Empire was unable to hold the colonies alone. The king therefore had to seek help from various countries, including Russia.

English monarch George III personally sought military help to Catherine II, twice. He asked the Russian Empress to support Britain and provide a 20,000 army to suppress the riots in the New World. But Catherine had no wish to help the English.

The Empress first considered Russia’s interests and, therefore, twice rejected the British monarch’s request. Catherine II understood Treacherous England perfectly: Britain is a friend today and an enemy tomorrow.

Therefore, she was not against the strongest naval power of that time and surrendered at least a little. In addition, military assistance to the British could have provoked conflicts with other European countries, which also had colonies in America.

And the new war was worthless for the Russian Empress. Therefore, she refused to help George III. Of course, overseas, the decision of the stateswomen was made with enthusiasm.

At first, the Russian Empire simply did not intervene in the conflict between the British authorities and the North American colonies.

But it turned out to be impossible to ignore the actions of the English. Failure to succeed on land, the British established a maritime blockade of the American coast.

The British searched and robbed all the trading vessels arriving in the New World. Such measures, in turn, had a big hit, including Russian merchants and angered Catherine II.

Then the decision was made to declare so-called armed neutrality. The Russian Empire stated that it would continue to trade with America no matter what, and if required, it would guard its trading ships with warships, which it did by the way.

The Russian Navy protected the supply of food and other goods to rebellious America. So formally Catherine the Great sided with the rebels and thus confused all the hopes of the British.

In 1783, London surrendered and recognized the independence of the United States of America. The outcome of this war gave the beginning of a long-standing friendship between Russia and the young ocean state.

One of the US presidents even lived in Russia for a few years before leading the country. We are talking about John Quincy Adams.

At the beginning of the 19th century, he was sent to St. Petersburg with an important diplomatic mission – to develop partnership relations and mutual understanding with the Russian Empire. Adams completed the task.

Furthermore, he befriended Emperor Alexander I and pledged his support in the international arena. Later, becoming Secretary of State of the United States,

Adams drafted the so-called Monroe Doctrine without the help of Russia, according to which the entire territory of North and South America is an exclusive area of interest of the United States. PLEASE SHARE OUR STORIES.
