ROMAN ANECDOTES STILL USED TODAY

Ancient Roman culture left us with many winged expressions that are still used to express complex ideas and feelings. Here are a few of the most popular ones:

1. Alea iacta est (The Lot Is Casted) – these words uttered by Julius Caesar when crossing the Rubicon symbolize the final and irreversible decision.

2. Veni, vidi, vici (He came, he saw, he conquered) is a legendary expression of Caesar describing his quick and decisive victory at the Battle of Zel.

3. Carpe diem (Seize the moment) is a call to relish the present moment without postponing it for the future. Appeared thanks to the poet Horatsia.

4. Memento mori (Remember Death) is a reminder of the impermanence of life and the inevitability of death, which serves as a call to conscious living.

5. Panem et circenses (Bread and Circuses) is an expression invented by satirist Yuvenal to describe the politics of the Roman authorities, who sought to control the people only to provide it with food and entertainment.

6. Cogito, ergo sum (I think, therefore, exist) is a phrase by the philosopher Descartes, although it belongs to the modern age, has its roots in the Roman philosophical tradition and the Latin language.

7. Sic transit gloria mundi (This is how the worldly glory passes) is a reminder of the ephemeral of earthly glory and greatness.

8. Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto (I am human, and nothing human is alien to me) is an aphorism of the Roman playwright Terence, emphasizing the general human nature and the common interests of people.

9. Non scholae, sed vitae discimus (We learn not for school, but for life) are Seneca’s words, emphasizing the importance of the practical application of knowledge.

10. Festina lente (Hurry Slowly) is an expression attributed to Emperor Augustus, reminding us of the importance of prudence and caution in business, even if it is necessary to act quickly. PLEASE SHARE OUR INSPIRING STORIES
