MICHAEL WALSH: Although the incident happened thirty years ago it was another of life’s events that stayed in my memory where it remains.
One can be sure that most can relate to my experience when recalling events that defy explanation – unless you have the gift of knowing.
Overdue for a visit to my dentist my tooth was going south. By the time I reached my friend’s home, I was in considerable pain. It had got to the point when the dentist’s drill – without anaesthetic would have been the preferred option.
Grin and bear it, I thought. ‘I’ll take something to kill the pain. Tomorrow I will visit to my dentist.
As soon as I stepped over Julie’s doorway, I asked her if she had a paracetamol. I explained to her why I needed it. After a moment’s thought my friend instructed me to stand quite still in the middle of her kitchen.
‘Stand with your back to me, close your eyes and do not turn around.’

Puzzled, what else could I do but stand as my long-time friend suggested I do? I had no idea what was going on in my attractive middle-aged friend’s mind and to this day I don’t know.
Distracted by pulsing stabs of tooth pain I stood silent with my back to Julie Warrington-Jones and dutifully closed my eyes. I knew only that she was standing I presumed a couple of metres away.
Still bemused, I had stood for just a moment or two when the agonizing stabs of pain completely disappeared. I can only describe what happened as being similar to switching off a light switch.
During the moments I obediently stood with my eyes closed and my back to my friend my toothache completely disappeared. It never returned whilst we relaxed and chatted. I cannot recall if I had my ailing tooth seen to. That incident was the end of the matter.

Naturally, I was curious but whilst talkative – and knowledgeable in most other matters, my well-educated friend refused to be drawn on what she had done to switch off my toothache. Julie told me it was none of my business. That was the end of the matter – and my toothache.
If you can tell me please keep it to yourself; I don’t want to know. I am simply grateful for the many things in my life that to me are enigmatic. Perhaps they are meant to be?
What I can tell you is that I have known Julie Warrington-Jones since she was attending school. My friend had later worked for me as my full-time secretary at an estate agency I owned.
We never discussed such matters but it was no secret that my friend now colleague was into the world of magic and the mysterious.

‘Each to their own,’ I thought. I never investigated as the spirit world is simply beyond my comprehension. I hasten to add that I am aware of its existence.
There is much beyond my understanding but like faith and much else in life it does not mean the mysteries of life and death don’t exist.
Only closed-minded people airily dismiss as poppycock what they don’t understand. One thing can be certain; such people never come up with a logical explanation so who exactly is talking poppycock? The close or open-minded people?
Never before have I publicly mentioned this incident. I told only my sceptical family and close friends but I did run my story past my healer friend, Carol Everett.
Carol’s reply; ‘Those who know don’t tell.’
Read into that what you wish. My view remains. ‘If it works, great. If it doesn’t, tough.’
Which is what the surgeon says just before he operates and the priest says before he prays. Strangely, these same people and many more professionals say the same as Julie Warrington-Jones and Carol Everett.
