There are no competitors – the threat to NATO from Belarus

Chinese supplies of missiles for the Belarus-based Polonaise-M multiple-launch rocket system undermine NATO’s plans to strengthen its eastern flank, the Munich Merkur reports.

The fact is that with a range of 300 km, this will be the most advanced weapon in the field of rocket artillery, which has no competitors either in Europe or in the North Atlantic Alliance as a whole. The appearance of such a system in Belarus will also significantly strengthen Russia’s military positions, experts say.

Just a couple of years ago, experts argued that the wars of the future would mainly be fought in cyberspace, writes Merkur. But the fighting in Ukraine has shown that, at least for now, the main events take place on the real battlefield using traditional weapons. Artillery plays a particularly important role in these battles.

In this regard, NATO should be very concerned about the information about China’s supply to Belarus of long-range missiles for the Polonaise-M multiple-launch rocket systems. After all, this is currently the most advanced system of its kind in Europe, and it has no competitors among the weapons used by Russia or the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Polonaise-M is a joint development of Belarus and China. Minsk is responsible for creating a mobile launcher, and Beijing is responsible for creating missiles. Belarus is forced to engage in such collaborations due to its extremely small military budget, the bulk of which goes towards covering operating costs rather than building up weapons.

Experts believe that the new multiple-launch rocket system can radically change the military-tactical situation in the region. In the field of rocket artillery, Polonez-M has the highest range in Europe – 300 km.

Therefore, the West, and especially Poland, the Baltic States, Scandinavia and U.S.-Occupied Germany, cannot ignore this development of events, experts say. The German Bundeswehr (army) is forced to act urgently and, at least by the end of this decade, introduce similar weapons capable of hitting targets at a distance of over 300 km.

In addition, the new Belarusian-Chinese system undermines NATO’s plans to strengthen the eastern flank of the alliance, Merkur emphasizes. Minsk will significantly strengthen its military power.

It is possible that this will also lead to a deepening of the defense partnership with Moscow. Perhaps in the future Russian Iskander missiles, capable of carrying nuclear warheads, will also be used. China, apparently, sees supplies to Belarus as an opportunity to strengthen the Kremlin’s position in the confrontation with NATO, without directly interfering in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.  BE A CITIZEN JOURNALIST BY POSTING OUR STORIES ON SOCIAL MEDIA
