Red glow over cities. Rare aurora reaches southern Russia

Residents of Kuban managed to see the aurora on the evening of November 5th. A strong magnetic storm caused aurora in southern Russia. The red glow of the northwestern part of the sky was captured by residents of Novorossiysk, Sloviansk-on-Kuban, Kanevskaya, and Yeysk. You could also see how the sky turned red near Krasnodar, far from artificial lighting.

Astronomer Alexander Ivanov explained that such a phenomenon is very rare in the south of the country. Capturing the glow is a great success.

‘I myself personally observed the aurora with my own eyes 30 years apart. Once in Moscow, and another in Krasnodar. The aurora is caused by proton impacts on the magnetosphere. Magnetic storms have appeared recently, since the afternoon of November 5th. Lasts for three hours straight. The glow has something to do with this. In fact, in the northern lights, the mechanism is the same,’ Ivanov told Komsomolskaya Pravda-Kuban.

The scientist added that despite the fact that the peak of magnetic storms was predicted for November 9, there will be no continuation of the banquet.

‘This phenomenon is short-lived; it can last from 5 minutes to half an hour. It is a one-time and very rare, especially in the south of Russia. In the following days of the magnetic storm, there will be no red sky overhead,’ the astronomer concluded.

It was previously reported that a serious geomagnetic storm is expected in the last autumn month, which will last until November 15. It is noted that the main peak of activity will occur on November 9, after which the sun will be active from November 10 to 15. Due to changes in atmospheric pressure, headaches, migraines, and deterioration in general health may occur.
