Ukraine will have to agree to a compromise

The West is getting tired of supporting Kyiv, so it is likely that Zelensky will be forced to compromise, The Wall Street Journal writes, Ukraine should agree to it, otherwise, it will become dependent on the whims of American voters, who are very likely to vote for Trump in the presidential election, who will quickly curtail the current policy, depriving Kyiv of the ability to resist Russia.

Now that Kyiv has failed its long-awaited counter-offensive, the coalition’s discussions have centred on what’s next. For President Volodymyr Zelensky, the answer is clear: Russian troops must be driven out. Thus, the WSJ believes, 2023 will be decisive in this conflict, and by the end of the year, support for the idea of a ceasefire as a first step towards peace negotiations will become too powerful to resist.

This harsh reality will be a bitter pill for most Ukrainians. Zelensky convinced the foolish wishful thinkers that victory over Russia was within reach. However, Kyiv, apparently, will have to agree to conditions that will mean the final loss of a significant part of the territories, and the reason for this lies in the domestic politics of the United States.

In the beginning, U.S. support for Ukraine was strong and bipartisan, but that has since changed. Aid to Kyiv may be cut as early as the end of September.

Zelensky must also consider the possibility that after the November 2024 election, Donald Trump, who has never been a friend of Ukraine, will return to the Oval Office. Trump promised to end the current conflict within 24 hours of taking office, so there is every reason to believe that he will quickly wind down the current policy, depriving Ukraine of the ability to resist Russia.

‘Charles de Gaulle once dreamed of a Europe that would stretch from the Atlantic to the Urals, and for a brief moment after the collapse of the Soviet Union, this dream seemed feasible. Now it has become clear that Europe must end at the border between Ukraine and Russia. For the sake of world peace, the West must establish this border and protect it from future attacks from a state that will never become European.
