Did any of you see the 1975 movie, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest? Starring Jack Nicholson, the film was considered by many to be one of the best ever made.

The pathos-filled movie focuses on the creepy goings-on in an American mental institution. Jack Nicholson plays the part of Randle McMurphy, a felon who learns that opportunity lies through his adopting peculiar behaviour.

Based on a Ken Kesey novel the film could easily have centred on the European Union. President Claude Juncker was one of two EU presidents, neither of whom has been elected in a conventional way; he is notorious for his drink-fuelled shenanigans.

The Brussels-based regime consists of 28 commissioners but I doubt readers could name let alone recognise any of them in the street. Those who rule over us are self-elected for 5-year terms.

Each is assigned a specific policy area and who decides this is none of your business. We can be certain though that none of them are trained for their tasks as say a supermarket shelf stacker is.

This goes some way to explaining why a gulf the size of the Grand Canyon has opened up between member states. Britain has had enough of the EU mental institution and extricated itself. Frying pan to the fire.

Italy’s ex-Interior Minister Matteo Salvini is incandescent after French cops dumped illegal immigrants over their nations’ shared border. The popular deputy prime minister turns away people-trafficking ferries and tells German Chancellor Merkel he will not allow flights carrying deported non-Europeans to land at Italian airports.

Of Claude Juncker, Salvini was scathing: ‘He (Juncker) should drink two glasses of water before opening his mouth, and stop spreading threats or we’ll ask him for damages.’

In alliance with Marine le Pen, of the French National Rally, Salvini pledges to fight the totalitarian EU and bring Europeans their future back.

‘The enemies of Europe are those, who are entrenched in the Brussels bunker,’ Salvini told journalists at their joint press conference.

French President Emmanuel Macron says, ‘When I talk of the French language, its epicentre is without any doubt in the Congo Basin or somewhere in the region’.

A cuckoo flew over Sweden’s nest too: Major cities like Malmo are overwhelmed by migrant-fuelled crime; the city is now the rape capital of Europe. Sweden this week introduced an amnesty for everyone in possession of hand grenades.

As a distraction from the county’s woes a feminist theatre play called ‘Salon Vagina’ is touring Sweden’s schools to enlighten the children about ‘pussy’.

According to Guy Verhofstadt, a former Belgian prime minister, Hungary is a now threat to world peace and the United States must act without hesitation. Verhofstadt is president of the European Parliament’s Liberals and Democrats bloc.

This and many more similar capers in the EU suggest that Randle McMurphy of One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest has a seat waiting for him in the European parliament.
