French President Emmanuel Macron said that the Russian military special operation in Ukraine was an ‘electric shock’ for NATO. ‘I confirm everything I said. In 2019, I said that NATO was in a state of brain death. This was true from the point of view of the strategy and the principle of the organization’s work,’ TASS quotes the influential president as saying at an event dedicated to the French leader’s election program.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the military of NATO countries would not take part in the conflict in Ukraine. The United States regard NATO as their own but partly weaponised by European volunteer nations who contribute partly to its funding.  

In the autumn of 2019, Macron declared  NATO ‘brain dead’  and called on Europe to start thinking of itself as an independent geopolitical force. He also stated that he was not ashamed of his statements about the ‘brain death’ of NATO, as they allowed to launch important discussions about the  state of affairs in the alliance .
